how his understanding of
the ministry of healing
developed over several
years beginning with his
return to the Church after
being away for several
years, through his years in
the seminary and as a
parish priest.
During his seminary
years he attended a healing
service conducted by Fran
cis McNutt which opened up
a new world to him. He
decided to apply what he
had learned in his own
ministry to the sick at St.
Kevin’s. The more he used
his ministry, he wrote, the
more his gift of healing
seemed to increase.
Later, as a deacon at a
parish in San Rafael, he
talked about healing during
a homily, explaining that
healing is very much a part
of the tradition of the
Catholic Church, “...if we
read the prayers at Mass
we see that the Church is
always praying for for
giveness and healing. We
take the forgiveness literal
ly, why should we not take
the healing literally? I in
vited anyone in the com
munity who wanted to ex
perience the healing love of
Jesus to come forward after
Mass, where I would be
happy to pray with them.
“The parishioners were
reluctant, to my disappoint
ment. Only two women
came forward. One had
cataracts, which are
removable only by surgery,
and I prayed over this
woman three times. Her
cataracts disappeared. Her
doctor was amazed and
sent her to a specialist. The
specialist looked and look-

daughters, Melitta and

they moved to Atlanta in
1916 their son Hans was

Mr. Butzon died in 1968
at the age of 89. She has six
grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.

ed, but could find no
cataracts.
“The second woman who
came up that day had terri
ble back problems. The
pain was so severe that it
was difficult for her to do
even simple household
chores. After our prayer
she was completely heal
ed.”
After he was ordained
and assigned to a parish in
Novato, a cancer victim he
had helped several times
died in great pain. Then he
began to question the whole
healing ministry.
“For a year I was very
cautious about praying
over anyone. I would not
pray over cancer or any
other serious illness. But as
time went on I began to
realize that the terrible way
in which this woman had
died should not keep me
from praying over people. I
came to understand that
when no physical healing
occurs, people still ex
perience an inner healing,
that Jesus touches them
and gives them a feeling of
being loved, totally and un
conditionally. I saw this
ministry as a real blessing
for the Church and that
there was a great need to
educate people about heal
ing.”
Father Bain believes a lot
of the healings are occuring
by natural causes, simply
because people are ex
periencing love: of their
fellow parishioners, of a
priest. The healings, he
said, do not come from the
priest. The parishioners are
made aware that it is the
prayers of the community,
not just the priest, that are
heard by Jesus.
The healing ministry in
the Bay Area of San Fran
cisco, he wrote, has grown
to such a degree that a Mass
for healing at St. Mary’s
Cathedral was attended by
4,000 people. One woman
was healed the moment she
touched the cathedral
steps. “The power of Jesus
to heal through His people is
coming to be known anew.”
