Follow Donnellan Example,
Cardinal Tells Seminarians
BV JOSEPH L. LAURIA
The late Archbishop Thomas A. Don
nellan, a former rector of St. Joseph’s
Seminary in Dunwoodie, N.Y., was held up
as a model for the current students as Car
dinal John O’Connor of New York
celebrated a memorial Mass in the semin
ary chapel Oct. 30.
Cardinal O’Connor called Archbishop
Donnellan “a man of great tolerance” who
was impatient only with fraudulence. The
cardinal delivered the homily at the Mass
which was concelebrated by five bishops
and 75 priests.
Archbishop Donnellan was rector of St.
Joseph’s Seminary from 1962 to 1964.
The New York Archdiocese arranged for
the archbishop’s sister, Nancy, to fly to
New York for the Mass. She sat in a front
pew and afterward was comforted by Car
dinal O’Connor and Katherine Cooke,
sister of the late Cardinal Terence J.
Cooke.
‘‘Tom Donnellan was a man of great
tolerance of many people,” the cardinal
said during his homily. “The only thing he
did not tolerate was fraudulence. He hated
a phony.”
“According to his ways,” he said to the
seminarians present, “I advise you to live
by the truth, to speak the truth, no matter
where the chips may fall. This was the
kind of man Tom Donnellan was.”
Cardinal O'Connor said, “As soon as I
heard of his death, I did something I have
never done before. I called Washington to
try to cancel my scheduled trip to Rome. I
said Tom Donnellan died, I can’t go. But I
was told I had to go.” Cardinal O’Connor
attended a meeting of the committee of
cardinals which advises the Vatican on
financial matters.
“Whenever I would attend a national
conference of bishops," he said, “I would
be sure to sit next to Tom Donnellan. He
was the only one who could explain to me
exactly what was going on. And when it
came time to vote, all T had to do was learn
how he was voting and do the same
because there was no one who was as
familiar with the breadth of church issues
as was Tom Donnellan.”
Joseph Lauria is a writer for Catholic
New York, newspaper of the New York
archdiocese.

Jude Church, 7171 Glen-
ridge Drive, Sandy Springs.

According to Anita
Willoughby, pastoral assis

syndrome that follows and
devastates many women,
the emotional and spiritual
healing that is possible
through counseling and
support. Confidential in

That post-abortion syn
drome does exist, despite
the denials of the purvey-
ers of abortion, is a reality
for many girls and women
who have had abortions
and later became in
capacitated by guilt. This
guilt, psychologists say,
can afflict them in the form
of depression, nightmares,
and problems with in
timate relationships
Sometimes these symp
toms can go unrecognized
and untreated for years.
It has slowly been
acknowledged that while
the healing process is a
slow and emotional one. it

Support
can be helped through the
understanding and caring
of others.
Since the first session
was publicized in com
munity newspapers Mrs.
Willoughby has received
calls from several women
and has met individually
with each before bringing
her into the group session
where first names are
used. She hopes that they
can experience the begin
ning of self-acceptance and
forgiveness as they hear
stories of other women who
have suffered the trauma
of abortion.
Mrs. Willoughby said
women responding to the
invitation to take the first
step toward healing can be
assured of support and con
fidentiality.
“The need is there,” she
said and mentioned one
young woman who called to
say she was “just glad that
we were there. We’re step
ping out in faith but it will
take time.”
