MacDonald, Southern
Christian Leadership Con
ference vice president, was
the guest speaker. He relat
ed Martin Luther King, Jr ,’s
life to the Biblical story of
Joseph. When Joseph was
taken captive into Egypt
his captors said, “Here
comes the dreamer, let us
kill him and see what
comes of his dream.”
MacDonald explained
that with the death of King,
‘‘They had killed the
dreamer but not the
dream, because you and I
are keepers of the dream.”
As keepers of the dream,
MacDonald urged the
students not to shrink from
their responsibility, but to
be willing to stand up for all
those who are oppressed.
Marist students gave him a
standing ovation at the end
of his speech.
Concluding the service,
Marist students, faculty
and staff made a commit
ment to continue King’s
dream of a world filled with
peace by reciting the “Liv
ing the Dream Pledge.”
