Stress Slows Recovery
For Archbishop Marino
BY GRETCHEN REISER
Archbishop Eugene A.
Marino, SSJ, is facing both
physical and psychological
stresses and doctors are
estimating his progress to
be less rapid than original
ly hoped for, said Father
Edward Dillon, vicar
general.
“The archbishop’s health
is responding to a great
deal of stress caused by
responsibility here at home
in the archdiocese and on
the national level,” Father
Dillon said in an interview
June 1. He is being cared
for by two physicians and a
psychologist, Father Dillon
said.
The vicar general, who is
responsible for the ad
ministration of the arch
diocese during the arch
bishop’s illness, said he has
been told by one of the
medical doctors and the
psychologist that the
stresses may be related to
cardiovascular functions
that can have psycho
somatic manifestations.
The archbishop has high
blood pressure, which
became dangerously high
recently, according to the
vicar general. While doc
tors have been able to
stabilize his blood
pressure, it is still higher
than normal, Father Dillon
said. The stresses that are
upon the archbishop are
very great and doctors are
concerned, he said. “One of
the doctors told me infor
mally ‘This much stress is
dangerous’ and hospitaliza
tion may be necessary.”
Father Dillon said that
he could not provide any
time frame for the arch
bishop’s recovery. “I’m
sorry there isn’t,” he'said.
“The only thing the doctors
have been able to give the
archbishop or me is that he
is not responding as rapidly
as they had hoped and
therefore it may be of pro
longed duration.”
Asked whether the arch
bishop may be unable to re
sume his duties as arch
bishop of Atlanta, Father
Dillon said, “That involves
pure speculation and
speculation can do nothing
but hurt.”
“We recognize that the
situation the archbishop is
dealing with right now is
serious and he needs our
prayers and our support,”
Father Dillon said. “But it
is also important to realize
that Archbishop Marino is
very positive in trying to
tackle the issues with his
doctors.”
“At times he considers
that task kind of daunting.
But I think his spiritual and
emotional reserves will
enable him to deal with the
situation,” Father Dillon
said. “In the meantime, the
programs and direction he
has established in the arch
diocese will be carried for
ward.”
The vicar general is talk
ing to the archbishop fre
quently on the telephone.

BY PAULA DAY
Father Ronald G. Fuchs, Jr., was ordained a priest for
the archdiocese June 2 by Bishop Daniel Leo Ryan, or
dinary of the diocese of Springfield, Ill.
Concelebrating the 10:30 a.m. liturgy at the Cathedral of
Christ the King were Father Edward Dillon, vicar general,
and Father Isaac McDaniel, OSB, the new priest’s spiritual
director. Other concelebrants were Father Edward Thein
and Father Don Kenny, past and present vocation directors
for the archdiocese; Father Richard Wise, pastor of Sts.
Peter and Paul parish where Father Fuchs worked as a
seminarian; and fellow St. Meinrad alumni, Father David
Talley. Father Fuchs offered his first Mass on Pentecost
Sunday, June 3, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Decatur.
Among the more than 50 out-of-town guests at the ordina
tion were Father Fuchs’ parents, Faye and Ronald Fuchs,
Sr., of Chicago; his brothers Joe, John, Tom and sister,
Lisa.
The candidate was presented to Bishop Ryan by Father
Kenny. After accepting him in the name of the whole
church, Bishop Ryan questioned Fuchs about his readiness
to accept the responsibilities of the priesthood. The can
didate then promised obedience to Archbishop Eugene A.
Marino, SSJ, and his successors and prostrated himself
before the altar while the gathered priests and laity prayed
for him and chanted the Litany of the Saints.
In the age-old sign of the Sacrament of Holy Orders,
Bishop Ryan and the assembled clergy, one by one, placed
their hands on the head of the candidate and prayed silently
for him. Bishop Ryan recited a prayer of consecration, in
voking God’s blessing on Father Fuchs.
Father Kenny vested the candidate with the stole and
chasuble, signs of his call to priestly service. Bishop Ryan
then anointed the hands of the newly ordained with chrism.
