Members of Atlanta’s
two Serra Clubs
entertained 19 archdioce
san seminarians at an
annual cookout held re
cently at St. Pius X High
School.
“The cookout gives
Serrans a chance to tangi
bly express our support for
the seminarians,’ ’ said Ken
Murphy, president of
Metropolitan Atlanta Serra
Club. “This is at the very
core of our primary goal
which is to foster voca
tions.”

We must be receptive to the Word of God and everyone
baptized in the Son of God shares in the responsibility of
sowing the word of Faith, Bishop Raymond W. Lessard
told officers and district deputies of the Georgia State
Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Speaking at the annual investiture ceremony held July
14 at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Augusta, the Savannah
bishop admonisned the otticers to never forget they are

“It’s an occasion for an
important exchange be
tween the seminarians and
the Serrans,” added Bob
Schellman, a trustee of the
North Metro Serra Club.
“We look for every op
portunity we can to sup
port and encourage the
seminarians as they com
plete their work toward the
priesthood.”
Schellman noted that the >.
cookout and continuing §
contact with the seminari- §
ans is particularly impor- £
tant because Atlanta has
no seminary and its semi
narians are spread out in
schools in four states as
well as overseas.
The barbecue was host
ed jointly by the Metro
Atlanta and North Metro
Serra Clubs.
The Serra Club is an
international organization
which fosters and
promotes religious voca

seminarians’ cookout, the
two clubs sponsor several
other programs and pro-

honor the archbishop and
the priests serving in the
archdiocese and the

Bishop Lessard, in his
homily, made reference to
the day’s reading on the
parable of the sower. He
said Jesus was telling us
“that so much depends on
how receptive we are,
whether we shall have
faith or not and what kind
of faith we are to have. In
the story, the Lord is the
sower of the seed and the
seed is the gift of His
word.”

must “also nurture that little
choked off by the weeds and
and revelations.
The bishop said we
identify God as the sower
and that He plants the seed
- sends down his word.
He has chosen to speak
through his son and his
son’s church ... I want to
suggest that anyone bap
tized in his son shares in
that responsibility of sow
ing the word of faith.”
“Everywhere you go,
whatever you do, whatever
you say, in some way you
are sharing that gift of
Faith,” Bishop Lessard
said. “You might rarely
know what is happening,
for it doesn’t happen that
quickly, or that effortless-
ly...It is not given to us to
know. It is the gift of God and in His wisdom He will see
that it will happen in his time and his way.”
“Do not be frustrated that you see no results, or that it
appears it really doesn’t make that much difference if you
don’t plant the seed. Believe me it makes a big differ
ence,” the bishop told the Knights.
