Christmas is the time for observing the
birth of the Savior with joyful Liturgies,
carols and hymns. Unfortunately, it can
also be a season when social activities
place individuals in situations where over-
indulgence can occur.
Anyone entertaining or being enter
tained during the holiday season would be
wise to keep in mind that moderation or
abstinence, depending upon the individ
ual’s own situation, is the way to avoid
embarrassment or, in many cases, tragedy.
Social events should have a reason for
being other than alcohol consumption and
it should be life enhancing. If the only
reason a person is going is to get alcohol,
that is drug-seeking behavior.
Asking ourselves questions like: Do I
really want or need to be with these per
sons? Is there some sentimental reason I
am doing this and is it a life-enhancing
sentiment? Do these persons affirm me or
do I feel compelled to put on a “good
front?” Is this my idea of a good time?
Do these persons do or want me to do
activities that I morally do not agree
with? Would I recommend this to a
friend? If the answer is no to any of
these, then reconsider attending or giving
the event
Hostesses should have equally attrac
tive presentations of, and an equal amount
of, non-alcoholic beverages with alcoholic
drinks. If serving punch, label both. To
label only non-alcoholic beverages stig
matizes them. They are the beverages that
do not cause pain and suffering.
Caffeine increases the effects of alco
hol, it does not counteract it. Drinking
coffee or another caffeine-laden beverage
speeds up the metabolism rate which will
make the person feel more alert tempo
rarily. Nicotine has a similar stimulant
effect This speeded up metabolism actu
ally delivers more alcohol effect to the
brain.
If alcohol is served at a gathering, it is
important to serve substantial food along
with it. Drinking on an empty stomach is
not only unkind to the stomach lining, it
also impairs judgment and reflexes more.
It is important that the designated
driver does not drink at all. Alcohol is not
predictable in anyone, not just alcoholics;
fatigue, medication of any sort, diet
changes, an infection and other variables
can temporarily change all persons’ toler
ance to alcohol.
