TRUMAN ESTABLISHES SPECIAL COMMIT¬
TEE TO FIGHT HATRED AND INTOLERANCE
IN UNITED STATES
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — An executive
order creating a fifteen-member Civil Rights
Committee to combat hatred and intolerance
in the United States was issued by President
Truman this week . The new body was directed
to study and recommend new civil right legis¬
lation and other means “to protect all parts of
the population” in the United States.
The Committee will be headed by C. E.
Wilson, president of the General Electric Com¬
pany- It includes among its members Rabbi
Roland G. Gittelsohn of New York City, who
is spiritual leader of the Central Synagogue at
Rockville, Long Island, and recipient of the
Nevy Commendation Medal for his services as
the Jewish chaplain of the Fifth Marine Divi¬
sion at Iwo Jima; Franklin D. RooseVeit, Jr.,
chairman of the housing committee of the Am¬
erican Veterans Committee; Morris Ernst, New

and a former member of the FEPC.
LESS THAN 5,000 DISPLACED JEWS FROM
GERMANY ENTERED U. S. SINCE
LAST MAY
MUNICH, (JTA) — Only 4,700 displaced
persons have emigrated from Germany to the
Uhited States since last May, although under
present quota regulations more than 25,000 could
have been admitted in that period.
The figures were contained in an announce¬
ment by Military Government headquarters at
Frankfurt that about 900 DP’s left Bremen
this week for the U. S. aboard the Marine
Flasher, reducing (he numiber fctijl awaiting
passage at Bremen to about 1,200.
Officials attribute the delay to the fact
that only a few ships have been assigned to the
Bremen-New York emigration run. They dis¬
closed that they have appealed to both the War
and State Departments for additional shipping.

New York Sets the Pace
An epoch-making decision, setting an ex¬
emplary lead in courage and generosity for
all of American Jewry, was reached by the
leaders of the New York Jewish Commun¬
ity, when they adopted a goal of $65,000,000
for the New York City United Jewish appeal
in 1947.
New York thus became the first city in
the nation to respond to the challenge laid
down to American Jewry at the Atlantic
City Conference which determined that the
needs of the United Jewish Appeal required
$170,000,000 in 1947.
It was reported that up to the time of the
meeting, New York had raised $32,000,000 in
the 1946 campaign.
LARGE TRANSPORT OF DISPLACED PER¬
SONS ARRIVE IN NEW YORK
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Eight hundred and
forty-one survivors of concentration camps in
American-occupied zones in Europe arrived
here this weeek aboard the Marine Marlin.
Their arrival brought the total number of
immigrants from the occupied zones of various
nationalities and all faiths, to about 5,000 mark
since President Truman’s directive on immi¬
gration of displaced persons was issued a year
ago this week. Immigration of refugees and dis¬
placed persons from all parts of the world in¬
cluding the occupied zones was less than half
the 39,000 total permited by he quota law.
The passenger on the “Marine Marlin," who
are the first large group to arrive since Septem¬
ber due to lack of space for immigrants on
shrips leaving Bremerhaven, will be aided in
moving to communities troughout the country
by the United Service for New Americans. Ar
rangemens for the placement in foster homes
of 93 orphaned children in the group will be
by European Jewish Children’s Aid
local child-care agencies.
