JEWISH ALLIANCE
JEA Softball Team
Wins League Title
Under the very capable guid¬
ance of manager Harry “Gig”
Eichholz, the JEA Golden Torna¬
does won the first softball champ¬
ionship in^the history of the JEA
as they defeated the U. S. Engi¬
neers in their final league game
by an overwhelming 16-4 score.
The Alliance lads were entered in
the City League’s Red Division,
one of the fastest softball loops
in the City, and came out on top
of the heap with a very impres¬
sive record of 18 wins and only
a single loss. They were defeated
in their opening game of the sea¬
son by the Savannah Gas Com¬
pany, but after that they ran up
a string of 18 consecutive wins
and in doing so defeated some of
the best tearms in the city. By
virtue of copping the title the
Golden Tornadoes are heavy fav¬
orites to take the annual City
Softball Tournament which will
commence shortly.
For the past five seasons the
JEA had entered the City League,
however they were never able to
finish higher than fourth place.
This year manager Eichholz mold¬
ed together a smooth working out¬
fit by combining a few newcom¬
ers and some old veterans. The
Alliance, although a light hitting
club, was by far the best defen¬
sive team to play in the city this
season and held their opponents
to an average of less than three
runs per game. Combining hustle
and team spirit this year, the
lads were not to be denied and
won the title going away.
In addition to the league games,
the team defeated eleven other
opponents outside of league play.
In the annual JEA-Alumni tilt,
the team had too much experi¬
ence and took a twin bill from
their Alumni by counts of 8-5 and
6-5. Members of the softball team
were. Sanford Rubin, Leo Center,
Be:nard Kramer, Ruppert Heller,
Maurice Alpert, Henry Pike, Gil¬
bert Odrezin, Abe Palefsky, Rob¬
ert Gordon, Harry Eichholz and
David Weatherhorn. .
Gilbert Odrezin,
Leo Center, Max Kaminsky and
Meyer Sable will return.
GOLF
. . . The fall golf tournament
sponsored by the Physical Edu¬
cation Department will begin dur¬
ing the latter part of October.
All members who intend to enter
1 his tournament are asked to turn
in three score cards, so each
player can be given a proper
handicap and placed in a flight
with men of like ability. Please
get your scores in early to Sam
Wechsler at the Alliance.
