Atlanta University
Commencement Speaker
Mr. C. C. Spaulding, of Durham. North
Carolina, president of the North Caro
lina Mutual Life Insurance Company, de
livered the commencement address at the
75th commencement exercises conducted
by Atlanta University at 6 p.m. on Mon
day. May 28. in the Quadrangle facing
the Library on the campus. Approxi
mately sixty-five young men and women
received the graduate and professional
degrees of master of arts, master of
science, master of social work, and
bachelor of science in library service
from the University’s president. Dr.
Rufus E. Clement.
The Commencement speaker is a win
ner of the Harmon Award for creative
achievement in industry. He has been
at the head of the North Carolina Mutual
Life Insurance Company since 1923. Ac
tive in the civic life of Durham, he is a
trustee of the Southern Education Foun
dation, Incorporated, and a trustee of the
North Carolina College for Negroes and
of Shaw University. Among other affilia
tions, he is chairman of the National
Emergency Advisory Council for Ne
groes; treasurer and secretary of the
North Carolina Commission on Interra
cial Cooperation; president of the Me
chanics and Farmers Bank of Durham;
and president emeritus of the National
Negro Business League.
The events of the three day celebration
were as follows: The Presidents’ Recep
tion on Saturday, May 27, in the Uni
versity Dormitories; at 6:30 P.M. on the
same evening, the alumni of Atlanta
University held their annual meeting in
the Exhibition Room of the Library;
Monday evening, May 28, at 8 o’clock

Baccalaureate Sermon
Dr. Wyatt Aiken Smart, professor of
Biblical Theology at Emory University,
preached the baccalaureate sermon to
(he graduating classes of Atlanta Uni
versity. Morehouse College and Spelman
College on Sunday. May 28. at 3 p.m.
in Sisters Chapel. Spelman College.
Dr. Smart has been on the faculty of
Emory University for the past thirty
years. A graduate of Vanderbilt Uni
versity and Union Theological Seminary,
lie has been honored for his achieve
ments by Southern Methodist University
with the degree of doctor of divinity.
He has held pastorates at the Trinity
Church. Lynchburg, Virginia; the Park
View Church, Portsmouth, Virginia; and
the First Church, Charlottesville, Vir
ginia.

lanta University System will formally
begin on Saturday, May 27, with the re
ception of the Presidents of the affiliated
institutions to the Graduating Classes
from 8 to 10 o’clock in the University
Dormitories.
the Annual Banquet of the Alumni was
held in the University Dining Hall. Mem
bers of the Class of 1944 were honored
guests at the banquet along with three
members of the University faculty who
have been retired: Dr. W. E. B. DuBois,
professor of sociology; Dr. William Stan
ley Braithwaite, professor of creative
literature; and Miss Hattie V. Feger,
professor of education.
Morehouse College
Commeiieement Speaker
The 77th commencement address at
Morehouse College was delivered by
Judge Hubert Delaney, of the Domestic
Relations Court of the Citv of New York.
The exercises were held at 10:30 a.m. on
Tuesday, May 30, in Sale Hall Chapel
on the Morehouse College Campus.
The speaker is a graduate of the New
York public schools, the College of the
City of New York, and New York Uni
versity Law School. In 1927 he was ap
pointed by the Honorable Charles H.
I little as Assistant U. S. Attorney for
the Southern District of New York. When
Mayor LaGuardia took office on Jan
uary 1, 1934, he appointed Mr. Delaney
as a Tax Commissioner for the Borough
of Manhattan, City of New York; and
eight years later, on August 1. 1942, he
appointed Mr. Delaney a Justice of the
Domestic Relations Court of the City of
New York.
Active in civic and community affairs,
Judge Delaney is a member of the board
of directors of the N. A. A. C. P., the
National Urban League, Council on Af
rican Affairs, National Lawyers’ Guild,
Talladega College, Wiltwyck School for
Boys, City-Wide Citizens’ Committee of
Harlem, the Y.M.C.A., and the U.S.O.
These exercises brought to a close the
events which had been planned for the
commencement season of 1944.
