One of the first guests on our campus was Marian Anderson. Practically the entire student body and faculty were present at Miss Anderson’s concert at (he City Auditorium. Our Glee Club had the honor to sing for her while she visited us. During the same week Klaus Liep- mann, violinist, and Edwin Gerschefski. pianist, offered two musical programs. In January Mr. Gerschefski returned to our campus and gave a very enjoyable piano recital. On the program was the piano version of Guadalcanal Fantasy, written by Mr. Gerschefski for the United States Marine Band. We considered that an especial treat. In December there came the seven teenth annual Christmas Carol Concert, in which the Morehouse College* quartet and the two glee clubs participated with the chorus. After singing two nights at Sisters Chapel, another performance was given at Lawson General Hospital. The Harreld String Quartet made its initial appearance for the year on De cember 2 at our regular Chapel service. The members of the quartet are Mr. Harreld, Mr. James, Clarence Render, and Madeline Patterson. Since then, we have had the pleasure of hearing it perform several times. On January 13 the Spelman College Glee Club was presented in a concert at Wheat Street Baptist Church by the Atlanta-Spelman Club. The quartet, the members of which were Alfreda Wooden, Anita Lewis, Nanna Patterson, and Ida Kilpatrick, and soloists Mae Belle Finch and Mattiwilda Dobbs, gave special vo cal selections. Eunice Jackson and Jac quelyn Warren played piano numbers. Charlotte and Artiss DeVolt afforded an unusual musical treat to the students and friends of Spelman one Saturday eve ning in February. Charlotte DeVolt is an accomplished violinist and her sister is widely-known on both our continent and in Europe as a harpist. They played two groups of selections together, then Miss Artiss DeVolt played several harp solos. The Spelman College Quartet was very active this year. It sang often at tlie Morehouse Chapel on Sunday mornings and at various churches and civic meet ings in the city. Mrs. Sara Owsley Stivers was their accompanist. (Continued on Page 25)
