The Y. W. C. A. In
Retrospect
Evelyn Spann, '46
The Y.W.C.A. has experienced a most
successful and eventful year during the
school term of 1943-44. The many ac
tivities have been entertaining yet edu
cational. Following is a brief review of
the major events:
October 3
The initial meeting of the Y.W.C.A.
was held in Howe Hall with the presi
dent, Miss Mable Emanuel, in charge.
This meeting helped acquaint the stu
dents with the objectives and functions
of the “V ". The cabinet members were
introduced.
October 17
The meeting was again held in Howe
Hall. The address for the evening was
made by Miss Mercy Cornelius, of Vel
lore. India. She was a most fascinating
speaker and will be long remembered
by all who heard her speak.
October 31
A candlelight service, for the purpose
of installing officers, was presented by
the membership committee. The service
was quite impressive.
November 11
Miss Lelabelle Freeman, of the Class
of ’44. was the speaker at the Armistice
Day Chapel Service sponsored by the
organization.
November 21
The junior and senior members of the
Y.W.C.A. met with the members of the
Morehouse Y.M.C.A. in their annual joint
meeting at Morehouse College. Miss
Mable Emanuel reported on the Berea
Conference.
November 27
The “Y” presented its first social event
of the year in the form of a Victory
Carnival which wa- most entertaining
and well attended by students of More
house as well as of Spelman.
December 5
The story of “The Other \\ ise Man
was read at the last meeting for the
year 1941. Christmas Carols were sung
and enjoyed by all.
January 2
The first meeting in the New Year was
held in the fire-side dining room with
Miss Frances Perkins as speaker. After
the talk by Miss Perkins, all joined in
the excitement of toasting marshmallows
in the open fireplace.
January 16
The Student - Faculty Relationship
committee was in charge of the meeting
which was held in Morehouse North.
Mrs. Marion Starling, speaker for the
occasion, discussed “Our Little Worlds.”
After the program refreshments were
served by the social committee.
January 30
Mrs. Grace Sloan Overton led discus
sion and answered questions on per
sonality and social adjustment problems
at the informal meeting which was held
in Howe Hall.
February 13
A business meeting in Morgan Hall.
The main feature was a report on the
Interracial Intercollegiate Council meet
ing by Miss Madeline Patterson.
February 27
The “Y” held its joint meeting of the
semester with members of the Morehouse
Y.M.C.A. as guests. The highlights of
the program were the reports made by
Mr. Guy Darnell and Mr. Clayburn, of
Morehouse. The meeting was ended with
refreshments served by the social com
mittee.
March 12
The music committee, headed by Miss
Lavada Stokes, presented “A Program of
Music” in memory of R. Nathaniel Dett.
March 18
The members of the cabinet were en
tertained at a luncheon given in honor
of Dr. Edwin C. Khow, representative
for the World Student Service Fund, in
the Fireside Dining room.
March 26
The meeting was held in the Packard
Hall Lounge wdth the Ministers’ Union
of Morehouse College presenting the pro
gram. “Christianity and the New World
Order" was the topic of the round table
discussion.
April 9
Miss Margaret Aikens, president of
the Clark College Y.W.C.A., reported
on the “Y" Southern Regional Confer
ence held at the Alabama State Teachers
College on March 11 and 12.
