The University Players, under the di
rection of the Dramatics Committee, suc
cessfully completed two major produc
tions during the year 1943-44. The play
season opened with Sidney Howard’s
The Silver Cord, a story of the strug
gle between a possessive mother and her
two sons. With Marie Cochrane, Albert
Barnes, and Mariella Ama in the lead
ing roles, the play made a very favorable
impression on the audiences both nights.
The excellent support of Louis Peterson
and Madeline Patterson was more than
necessary to make the action go smoothly
and weave the play together.
In April came a presentation of Allan
Kennard’s Cry Havoc, a play depicting
the experiences of 13 nurses on Bataan.
It was well received. Spelman should be
proud of the all-girl cast and crew of
that play. Lasting two hours with inter
mission, it moved along at a grave and
well accentuated pace to its tragic climax.
On Saturday afternoon, May 6, the
Drama Committee, Dr. Henrietta Herod,
Chairman; Mrs. W. G. Thomas and
Miss W. F. Perkins, entertained the casts
and crews of the two plays at the home
of Mrs. Thomas on Fort Street. The
dining room table was beautifully deco
rated and all were lavishly served with
fried chicken, French spaghetti, fresh
vegetable salad, hot rolls drenched with
butter, iced tea, fresh strawberry ice
cream, and chocolate cupcakes. Orchids
to Mrs. Thomas, Dr. Herod, and Miss
Perkins for such delectable refreshments.
