WANTED: AN ANSWER!
At a recent program planned by mem
bers of tbe student community in the
interest of helping to alleviate an inter
national crisis, two members of the
sparsely congregated audience tipped un
obtrusively from tbe hall. Their mission
was to get hurriedly across the campus
to their dormitories and by some method
of persuasion get other girls to come
to the program. They came back alone.
Subsequently, a few more girls trickled
in.
This incident illustrates the negative
attitude of some students toward the
activities of organizations on the campus
and the lack of inquiry as to what
fellow students can do and are doing.
Mary’s ability to organize remains abused
and unappreciated. An organization’s
program exists and is executed when
a few students with purpose and with
world-conscious attitudes act.
Disdainful of preachy editorials, we
shall not shake a reproving literary
finger at the student body. Hence, no
discourse on the value and advantages
of participating in extra-curricular activ
ities while in college. Rather, a ques
tion is asked of you. Considering any
and all excuses that may now be arising
on the basis of heavy schedules, neurotic
conditions, lack of popularity, outworn
wardrobes, warped personalities, etc.,
and then eliminating them on the basis
of their universality (each happens to
everybody and some people do something
about them), in sincere and simple
desperation we put the query, "For just
what did you come to college?"
ATTENTION, SENIORS!
Applications for the Pepsi-Cola gradu
ate fellowships are due in the offices
of the Pepsi-Cola Scholarship Board in
Palo Alto, California, by midnight, Janu
ary 2, 1948. In order to be eligible for
consideration, the completed application
form, endorsed by tbe dean or the presi
dent, must be accompanied by an official
transcript of undergraduate credits
through the junior year, the announce
ment states; and recommendations from
two professors should also be sent to
the board on the forms provided, to be
obtained from the dean.
Act now if you have not already taken
advantage of this opportunity! After
Christmas will be too late.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF
EUROPEAN RECOVERY
PROGRAM?
An Opinion Poll
The National Student YMCA’s and
YWCA’s Committee on Effective Citizen
ship wants to know so it can tell Con
gress! Christian Associations in seven
hundred fifty colleges and universities

covery Program during November and
to poll CA opinion on it in December.
A representative will use this material
when he or she appears at a Congres
sional Hearing in January or February.
Please answer “yes” or “no” to these
questions:
1. Should the United States grant
fifteen to twenty billion dollars during
the next four years to aid European
economic reconstruction? Yes
No .
2. Do you believe in this program
enough to support allocation of supplies,
price control and rationing as necessary
parts of it? Yes No .
3. Should the United States forbid
the use of these funds for the nationaliza
tion of industries in countries which de
sire to do so? \ es No .
4. Should the United States prescribe
tbe form of government a country shall
have to share in these funds? Yes
No .
What other suggestions do you have?
Fill out and return to Ruth Gandy.
BEGGAR’S RHYME
Christmas is coming, the geese are
getting fat,
Please to put a penny in the old man's
hat;
If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny
will do,
If you haven’t got a ha’penny, God
bless you!
THE SCRAPBAG
’1 our disc jockey received many re
quests during tbe month of tinsel, good
will and Christmas vacation here at
Spelman. Some ran like this
“Temptation”—to leave before those
Saturday classes.
“Two Loves Have I" -Christmas and
summer vacations.
“Don’t ^ ou Know”—the questions on
the finals yet?
“Since You Went Away"—a new fam
ily moved in next door. (Any sons?).
“Early in the Morning”—sweet cbapel
bells on tbe 5tb.
“Merry Christmas, Dear(s)”—to you
all!
Now that everybody is in that state
of blissful anxiety after completing that
last minute packing (done two weeks in
advance), including a few books tucked
in that extra space—just in case!—we’re
ready to be off. Ruth Gandy is getting
a long ride to Texas as guest of Priscilla
White. Money is pouring in for tickets
for trips in ^very direction. Naomi Cole
is going to visit alumnae Doris and
Roslyn Daniels in South Carolina. Ber-
thena Hunt is northward bound to
Pittsburgh. But whether it is home, or
to visit, or relax on the campus, the
days between the 20th and the 5th will
be happy ones for all.
One of our number writes that in our
enjoyment of the vacation, she hopes
we do not forget the reason for our
celebration or the people who are not
so fortunate as we. The condition of
the world today is such that we should
all be thankful and humble at Christ
mas-time.
And don’t forget that while you are
away from Spelman, the day for resolu
tions comes along. One freshman diary
reads: On January 1, 1948, I resolve
to make the following changes: 1) I
will study harder, for History and
Biology can be learned (they tell me!) ;
2) I resolve to go to breakfast at
[east three times a week; 3) I will
write home once a week; 4) I will count
only every other day ’til June.
What resolutions will you make?
Season’s greetings!
A MERRY
CHRISTMAS
