One of the nost outstanding features
of Spelman College is her 1'usic depart
ment. Spelman is noted for the outstand
ing musicians presented on hor college
campus each year, and for the great work
done by her music department under the
leadership of Hr. Kemper Harreld. This
year, three important events have begun
the music activities of the yea.-.
Ur. Erno Daniel was presented to
the Spelman College community and Atlanta
on October 25th. As Hr. Harreld had said
in Chapel, Hr, Daniel is one of the
greatest artists of our day. His program
included Bach’s Toccata and Fugue,
Mozart’s sonata in F Major, and Beethoven’s
Sonata, Opus 27, No. 2. Ur. Daniel dis
played much skill in his playing and his
program v/as enjoyed by all who attended
it.
Spelman presented on of her gradu
ates, miss MattiwiIda Dobbs, in recital
on Friday evening, December 2nd. This
v/as a great event for the College and
was locked upon with great anticipation
and anxiety by the Spelman students and
others. It v/as interesting to note that
Fisc Dobb’s accompanist/• was her sister,
I-rs. Irene Dobbs Jackson. Both are
Spelmar. graduates.
Every number was beautifully done
and well received by the audience. Hiss
Dobbs ’’as an impressive figure in a
breathtaking royal blue gown. Her quiet
dignity and finesse are the keynotes of
her accomplishment. The artist, by
greet demand of tne spellbound audience,
v/as generous with encores, The program
concluded with a group of Christmas
numbers among which was the "Glory Mange?"
arranged by Hr. Willis L, James. The
recital as a whole was a grand affair,
and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed
by all.
On Friday and Saturday evenings,
December 9th . nd 10th, another great
event v/as sbaged at Sisters Chapel. It
was the twenty-third annual Atlanta-
Spelman-Uorehouse Christmas Carol Concert.
"0 Come, 0 Come Emmanuel," a 13th einfcnry
eld French carol was used for the pro
cessional. "The Innkeeper’s Carol' by
Wagner, and "The Angel’s Song" by
Tschnesnokov opened the program. These
numbers, by the Atlanta-Spelman-More-
house Chorus were more than v/ell received
by the largo audience.
Other numbers done by the chorus
were "The Shepherd’s Carol" by Billings,
"Song of Nativity" and "Las Pascuas" by
Boughton, "The Cherry Tree" by Niles,
and "Go Tell It On the Mountain." The
Spelman College Glee Club was fully up
to expectation as it rendered "Presents
To The Child Jesus" by Geer, "0 All Ye
People, Give Ear" by Geer, and Geer's
"On The Twenty-Fifth of December."
The Morehouse Glee Club was v/ell received
as it sang "Along The Street I Hear" by
Barthalomew, "The Babe Divine" by
Strangv/ays, and "Glory to that New Born
King" by Work. The program v/as keenly
enjoyed by all who came, and the familiar
words, "I shall return next year," were
heard from many of the concert goers as
they left the chapel.
