Senior Class Dolores Jones Sophomore 3areu>ell to the SeniorT Fannie R. Gilbert On the college campus she is a leader conscious of the needs of her fol lowers. Like all good leaders, she has visions of new horizons for exploration, forever pointing the way upward for those who would follow in her footsteps. She has not stood on the threshold of learning with hesitance, but has firmly opened the door of learning with the courage and perseverance of those who search diligently for truth. After entering, she has been open-minded and eager to learn, for she knows that her success depends upon her determination. And now she must launch out into the surging sea of humanity, a clean cut, dynamic figure of womanhood pressing always toward higher and more worthwhile goals. She will lend herself to alleviate some of the world’s suffering, and knowing her duty to mankind, she will not be satisfied until her best has been given to any task. She will bear high the torch of knowledge, and with a kind word on her lips and God in her heart she will be a joy to all who meet her. We know that there are great things ahead for her. She will breast the rising tide with the love, faith, and gentle awareness of a true Spelmanite. We are proud to salute her as—the graduate of ’50. This year, June 4, 1950, Atlanta University. Morehouse, and Spelman are indeed fortunate in having Dr. Henry P. \ an Dusen as the baccalaureate speak er. \ ear after year, Atlanta University and the two affiliated colleges take pride in bringing to their graduating students national and world figures, persons who have important messages to bring. Dr. \ an Dusen is a native of Phila delphia. Pa. He received the A.B. degree from Princeton University, and he later received the B.D. degree from Union Theological Seminary. In 1932, the COMMENCEMENT NOTES Ph.D. degree was given him by the University of Edinburg. Dr. Van Dusen is an educator, editor, and author. Among his various duties, he has served as trustee of Princeton University and Smith College. His brilliant career as author has met with marked success. Among his many hooks are The Story of Christ, and God in These Times. The commencement speaker for Spel man is professor of Biblical Theology at Emory University as well as associate dean of the School of Theology and the University's chaplain. He is Dr. Wyatt Aiken Smart of Emory University. Author of The Contemporary Christ, The Spiritual Gospel, and Still the Bible Speaks, and ordained as a minister in the Methodist Church, he has held pastorates at Trinity Church, Lynch burg, Virginia, and the First Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. Added to his earned degrees at Vanderbilt Uni versity and Union Theological Seminary are honorary degrees from Southern Methodist l niversity and Ohio Wesleyan University.
