I am quite pleased to have the opportunity to say hello and
to greet members of the Clark College family in this first issue
of the Panther for the school year 1965-1966. Since my arrival
on September 1, I have come to know many of you. I am look
ing forward to knowing each of you personally as the year passes.
Clark College has a rich heritage and a long history of quality
education. Its alumni are known throughout the world for their
many and varied contributions to various human endeavors.
Their achievements as scholars and practitioners are well known.
During the present period of social change and transition in our
society, this generation of Clark College students can look for
ward to even greater contributions and achievements. Certainly
the challenge to be fully prepared to take advantage of expanded
and new opportunities has never been greater. Therefore, not
only must quality education at Clark be continued; it must be
made even stronger. Students, who are our primary concern,
must take seriously the challenge of the new day. I look forward
to all of us—faculty, students, alumni and Trustees—working
together effectively to further these aims.
Permit me to take this opportunity to express appreciation
for the hospitality extended to the Henderson family upon
joining the Clark College family. They join me in these brief
words of greeting.
Vivian W. Henderson

(LARK WELCOMES PRESIDENT
Dr. Henderson Named Eighteenth President;
First Leadership Change in Twenty-four Years
In the early part of 1963, Dr. James P. Brawley announced
his plans for retirement as chief administrator of Clark College to
the Board of Trustees. It was at this time that the Trustees began
the search for a new president, and in April of 1965, it was an
nounced that a president had been found to replace Dr. Brawley’s
long administration, Dr. Vivian Wilson Henderson.
It is not an easy task to find a president or accept the re
sponsibility of one, but we welcome our eighteenth president “Dr.
Henderson” into the Clark College family. We are confident that
with his leadership and experience, our institution will expand and
continue to move forward as it has done in the past with the co
operation of the faculty, staff and students.
Dr. Henderson is a Tennessean with wide experience in col
legiate administration and a background that includes teaching and
administrative positions at Prairie View and North Carolina Col
leges and at Fisk University where he was Chairman of the De
partment of Economics and Business Administration since 1962.
He has served as Director of the Fisk Summer School program
and directed several widely-known institutes.
This is the first time in 24 years that the administrative leader
ship at Clark College has changed.
Mrs. Anna Powell Henderson, wife, is a native of Bryan, Texas
and we welcome her as a part of us. We hope that Wyonella,
David, Dwight and Kimberly will enjoy their tours around the
Clark campus and we look forward for a great relationship with
them.
