DRIVING -
From page 2
According to the study con
ducted by the National
Institute of Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism, the reasons as to
why many youth drink alcohol
include: personal values and
orientation; social support and
social control from family,
peer pressure, deprivation, and
their attitudes toward
deviance.
The availability of alcoholic
beverages during the holidays
is easily accessible. The reason
being that just about everyone
you may come in contact with
will have some type of
alcoholic beverage on hand.
Remember that drinking
and driving don’t mix. So, this
holiday drive carefully so that
you won’t become another
statistic in a series of highway
fatalities.

The Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics held its graduation exercises
for students participating in the Nigerian Manpower Project on Friday, November
30, in McPheeters-Dennis Hall. The students received associate degrees in hospital
pharmacy jointly from Clark and Mercer University’s School of Pharmacy. Dr.
Gloria Scott presented the charge to the graduating class. The program is
coordinated by Dr. O.P. Puri, department chairman. (Photo by Tyraun Patterson.)
Over 15,000,000 students
and teachers will want
summer jobs in 1980. Many
have started looking already,
but even those who begin early
may find jobs much harder to
come by this year than last.
Higher unemployment has
made competition for all jobs
tighter than ever this year.
If you’re looking for a
summer job, there’s still a
shortcut way to find one.
That’s with the help of the
1980 Summer Employment
Directory of the United
States (Writer’s Digest Books:
$6.95) an annual handbook
that lists employers with over
57,000 job openings.
For the past 25 years,
thousands of students have
spent the summer working at
exciting places, and earning
money for next year’s
expenses, too, thanks to the an
nual Summer Employment
Directory.
This directory is packed full
of listings that give you the
prospective employer’s name
and address, a description of
the jobs available, em
ployment dates, salaries, and
other important information-
such as whether or not room
and board are available.
This year’s version of the an
nual directory lists 900
summer employers:
amusement parks, slimmer
camps, antional parks, private
resorts, summer theaters, of
fice temporaries, marketing
and sales organizations-
literally everybody who hires
summer workers.
CC Philharmonic
Choir Performs
Merry Christmas

BY EILEEN C. HOCKER

The Clark College
Philharmonic Society gave its
seventh annual Christmas
Vesper Concert at Central
United Methodist Church,
Dec. 9. According to choir
director Frank L. Boulware,
they performed a composition
that had never been done
before an Atlanta audience.
The composition was
“Magnificat in C”, by Johann
Pachelbel. Boulware said that
there are many different
versions to “Magnificat”, but
this is the first time for this
version to be performed in
Atlanta.
The choir which consists of
45 members sand to a large
audience at the church where
the entire evening service as
devoted to the Christmas
concert.
The choir did a variety of
numbers by different com
posers, including an excellent
rendition of “For Unto Us a
Child is Born” by Handel.
They also did three numbers
by black composers, William
L. Dawson and John W. Work.
This Christmas concert was
the first given by the choir
under the direction of Frank L.
Boulware.
Boulware, who hails from
Winston-Salem, N.C., replaced
Thomas A. Hager as the new
choir director. Before coming
to Clark, Boulware taught and
directed music at Bennett
College, North Carolina A & T
University, Gaston College,
Southern University in Baton
Rouge, La., West Charlotte
High School in North
Carolina, and in the New York
Public School System.
The beginning of the concert
began with a period of silent
meditation on the death of
Rev. William Henderson’s
father. Henderson, who
usually leads the devotional
part of the concert, was unable
to participate Sunday.
After the concer, a reception
in honor of the choir was held
in the basement of the church.
Happy New Year
From The Panther
Editorial Board
minute shopping, the crowds
and the lines, you get left with
nothing but the crumbs. Don’t
you just love Christmas?
The best part about it is that
all the relatives stay until
January 6. It is no better when
they leave because then you
have to clean up the mess.
After you finish that (about
March), you have to go out and
buy replacements for all the
things that were broken dur
ing the interim, that should
cost about $100.00 or more.
For all the trial and
tribulation, for all the back
breaking work, do you get any
thanks?.Don’t you just love
Christmas!
FACILITIES - From
page 2
It seems unnecessary for the
Panther staff to have to drive
to Decatur to print the
newspaper when Clark has the
equipment that the staff
should be able to utilize. Clark
gives money to the staff to pay
for gas and food when we drive
to Decatur to layout the paper.
The money that is given to a
printer could be invested in
either utilizing or expanding
the typesetting system at
Clark. President Blake, you
should take a serious look into
this matter.
I feel it is absolutely neces
sary for me to conclude this
editorial, because I could
elaborate on other issues that
are of great concern. Space,
however, does not permit me to
do so.
To those, who these two
above situations apply to, I
shall hope you take heed to
their importance. It would
eliminate some of the problems
that Clark has already en
countered for many years.
