SGA STARTS NEW YEAR RIGHT
By Angela D. Gravely

A forum for student
expression, a liaison between
administration, and a promoter of
intellectual dialogue describes the
purpose of the Student
Government Association.
The focus of Clark Atlanta
University's SGA has not changed,
it has only broadened. Speaking
to the student body in the E.L.
Simon Courts, the executive board
solicited student participation
and commitment to the campus,
last Wednesday during their first
general meeting for the semester.
The standing committees
established at the meeting will
improve the quality of student
life, strengthen academic skills,
create more social activities, and
culturally up lift the student body
according to SGA Graduate
President, Pamela Malone.
By focusing on areas such
as: hospitality, public relations,
social/community service, spirit,
graduate affairs, alumni affairs,
and video photo students will have
direct contact with the planning of
campus events, she said.
"I will like to see students
take charge of CAU. However, they
cannot take charge without being
responsible," Ms. Malone said.
"These committees will help
students apply class skills to
practical use, thus creating
responsibility and concern for the
university."
SGA Undergraduate
President, Ramona Houston said,
"the CAU student body must
realize their power in numbers.
They could move the university
the way they want."
Ms. Malone and Ms.
Houston agreed, standing
committees will also help
facilitate this need to get a more
active voice from the student body.
It will also allow the students to

UNDERGRADUATE SGA PRESIDENT
I would like to thank the student body for supporting me
throughout campaign week. Your advice, support, and
encouragement were greatly needed and appreciated.
On behalf of the CAUSGA I want to welcome all new and
returning students to our illustrious institution. The
CAUSGA has been working hard throughout the summer
preparing for the 1991-1992 academic year. We have quite
a variety of activities planned and we hope that the
students, faculty/staff, administration, alumni, and
friends will support all of our endeavors.
The CAUSGA is looking forward to working with each
and every one of you throughout the year. We need your
suggestions, ideas, and support to make the 1991-1992
school year a spectacular success.

interact and network with
university administrators and
staff, creating a better
relationship.
For example, the food
services committee will be
responsible for planning and
implementing various menus,
programs, and activities with the
cafeteria staff.
Also this year, the
transportation committee will be
responsible for arranging rides for
commuter students to the nearest
MARTA Station after on-campus
evening activities and
transportation to all off-campus
activities.
Among the various issue
discussed, students said they
wanted a SGA that was more
visible on campus and more
available.
’We have to stress the importance
of office hours to be accessible to
students," Ms. Malone said.
Another means of
visibility is moving the location
of the SGA meetings. "Bring SGA
to them," Ms. Malone added. 'We’ll
keep the same time, but we'll hold
the meetings in different
residential dorms."
Suggestion boxes will also
be placed in areas around the
campus to promote better dialogue
between the SGA and
students.
As a new officer, Ms.
Houston said, "the relationship
with the administration is very
productive. Although, we have
just started, they have been very
supportive and contact with them
during the summer was very
progressive."
Ms. Houston said that she
doesn't see any major problems
ahead for the students body or the
association. "I don't see any real
problems facing SGA or the
student body. We must recognize
our trouble areas as stumbling
blocks, but not as barriers,
"Houston added.
