Jungle Fever
Spike Lee has done it again. The heat of summer was intensified
by the release of his latest film. This movie focuses on two central
themes, interracial relationships and crack addiction.
Flipper Purify [Wesley Snipes] is a Black architect in a white firm
and he and his Italian temp secretary , Angie [Annabella Sciorra] have
an affair. Their families find out about their relationship and are
outraged. Flipper’s wife throws him out of the house and she and her
girlfriends have a heated discussion about the good and bad
characteristics of men.
Angie's father accuses her of degrading her family by dating a
Black man, beats her up and tells her to leave and not come back. She
and Flipper move in together which creates more problems than it
solves and eventually Flipper comes to the conclusion that he was just
curious about white and Angie was curious about Black.
Then the two try to patch things up with their families.
Gator [Samuel L. Jackson], is Flipper's brother who is addicted to
crack. Their father, "The Good Reverend Doctor," played by Ossie Davis,
has banished Gator from his house and does not have anything to do
with him. Their mother, played by Ruby Dee, refuses to believe the truth
about Gator being a crack addict and secretly cooks for him and gives
him money.
His addiction makes him violent at times and causes his death at
the hands of his father.
This movie is very emotional. It causes you to feel anger,
sadness, disappointment and is thought provoking. It gets three paws.
Boyz N' The Hood
John Singleton's movie focuses on growing up in South Central
Los Angeles and the different directions two young Black boys take as
they grow up.
Tre goes to live with his father [Larry Fishbum] after getting into
a fight at school while living with his mother. Doughboy and Tre are best
friends until Doughboy gets caught stealing and is sent to juvenile. His
brother Ricky and Tre become close friends while he is away.
The drama begins at Doughboy's welcome home party where we
are introduced to the characters as young men. Doughboy, played by
rapper Ice Cube, and Tre, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr., are reunited. Tre
and Ricky are high school seniors making big plans for the future.
Doughboy and his friends usually just hang out in the hood and have
street smarts that Tre and Ricky do not.
Doughboy's mother shows favoritism toward his brother Ricky
who has the opportunity to go to college on a football scholarship. She
feels that Doughboy is not going to amount to anything in life and treats
him that way.
Ricky gets killed as a result of an argument he had with a local
gangmember. Doughboy avenges Ricky’s death and shoots the guys
responsible. He in turn gets killed two weeks later.
This is a very dramatic movie that makes you recognize the many
problems in the Black community. At the same time, it makes you
realize that there are ways out of bad situations that are positive. It
leaves you with something to think about. This movie gets three paws.
