For the last three
years, Regana Hill coached
volleyball to high school
students at Clark Atlanta
University's
Upwardbound program.
Towards the end of
the summer, Betty White
approached her with the
preposition of being the
head volleyball coach for
the Panthers. The
vacancy opened when
Valerie Belt-Jones left to
coach at Spelman.
"I always wanted to
coach at the collegiate
level so I accepted," said
Hill. "I was especially
happy to work with CAU
because I remember coach
(Willie) Hunter from the
Atlanta public school
system. It will be a
challenge."
Hill, a native of
Atlanta, graduated from
Southwest High School.
She also earned a college
degree at Mercer
University in Macon,
Georgia.

The latest addition
to Clark Atlanta
University's Athletic
Department has legendary
roots.
Karen Brown, a
former Clark College
student, is the new Sports
Information Director.
She is also the daughter of
Jim Brown, the National
Football League's second
all-time rushing leader.
A former speech
major, Brown said she was
not prepared for her
present career, but she did
participate in athletic
activities such as
cheerleading, basketball
and track and field. These
activities helped broaden
her interest in sports.
She started her
career as an intern at
WCLK as a sports reporter.
In an effort to
carry on the family
tradition, Hill felt
obligated to work at CAU.
Her mother was a graduate
of Clark College and was
the secretary of the
athlethic booster club.
Before coaching
volleyball, she was a
coach for Long Middle
School, and Columbia
High School where she
taught girls basketball
and track.
She said her team
is motivated by teamwork,
spirit, and "Knowing How
To Get the Job Done." Hill
She wanted to be a play-
by-play reporter, which
needed dedication and
focus that she did not have
at the time. The next move
took her to New York,
where she continued her
steps and got involved in
sports once more. During
this time she was married
to a professional football
player and she had the
opportunity to learn the
ins and outs of football.
She worked with sports
writers and media
personel.
She later decided to
help high school seniors
who had the GPA and good
SAT scores to get the
exposure that they needed.
She helped to organize a
tournament which was
used solely for this
purpose. The tournament
was founded by Mr. Bob
Williams, who also
hanpens to be her mentor.
Keeps her girls in shape by
having them do warm-up
exercises, running sprints,
drills, and some weight
lifting when needed. She
has no negative thoughts
about her team because
she feels that everyone has
the potiental of being a
future star and able to
compete in the 1996
Olympic Games.
Ms. Hill
predictions for her team
this year are tight so far,
but she feels that her girls
will be in the playoffs by
November. When asked

Ms. Brown still remains
in contact with him. At
the foundation which
sponsored the
tournament, she worked
with Nate Archibald,
former Boston Celtic and
Marvin Powell, who was a
left tackle for the N.Y Jets.
Others included William
Roberts and Stacy
Robinson of the N.Y
Giants. She later went to
Louisiana and worked
with players from the New
Orleans Saints.
Ms Brown and a
friend Florence Anthony,
a writer for the New York
Post, both began the
company, "Florence
Anthony Agency". They
represented athletes for
speaking engagements and
rendered advice.
She later started
her own sports
management company,
which specifically gave
how long will she continue
to coach for CAU, she
said, "Until I retire", with
laughter.
She would like for
all of CAU's students to
join in on all the 1991
Volleyball games, because,
"It will be a season to
remember".
advice and assistant to
athletes in areas where
they needed it. This
company employed
women psychologists and
financial planners.
When asked if she
had a problem
establishing her own
identity, her reply was
"no”.
"Having a celebrity

a winning note as they

Brown. " I have had
negative encounters with
people who know me as
Jim Brown's daughter, but
I usually overlook those
incidents. I do not want
people to judge me for my
family relations. I think
my father is just a man
who achieved on the field,
so he could do what he
wanted off."
At CAU, Brown
compiles statistics,
markets and distributes
all the athletic
information. She decided
to come to CAU because
she wanted to give
something back.
Her main focus
now is the CAU Athletic
Department. She intends
to go back to school to
become a sports
psychologist. She enjoys
her job and wants to do all
she can to make the school
a better place. Her one
request for students, is
that they come out and
support their sports teams
all year round.
