Thanksgiving Day
Spectacle Re-enacted
Same time, same place and same
results. Thanksgiving Day, Hern
don Memorial Stadium, Morris
Brown defeated Clark in a game
of football. Morris Brown March
ing Wolverines blowed Clarks
band right out of the stadium and
the fashion show was no contest.
Clark scored ten (10) points, the
touchdown coming via a 40 yd.
pass from Clark Quarterback Ter
ry Lee to running back Robert
Richardson. Larry Henderson ac
counted for seven of the Wolve
rine points, via two (2) field
goals and a P.A.T. The touchdown
was scored by John Dillard on a
45 yd. pass play from Quarter
back Gregory Thompson. The
Wolverines defense played a su
perb game all evening. But it
was the offense that miscued all
day. There were people that were
naive enough to really think that
Clark would win the game.
They (the Panthers) put up a
good struggle but succumbed to
a superior football team. The
final score was 13-10 in favor of
the Wolverines however the score
was not as close as it seemed;
because the Wolverines should
have scored at least 30 points
on the ragged Clark defense.
Then too not to be overlooked
was the punting and kicking of
Michael Banks who constantly
kicked balls into the end zone
for no reason and kept the Wol
verines in good field position with
his timely punting.
Players who performed superbly
were DeRoy Hammonds John
(Bo - Dill) Dillard, Gregory
Thompson, Michael Branks, Gary
Lovett, Novell Goff, and Donald
Neal. So until Turkey Day when
the Wolverines will again feast
on C. C. Pie, right on Wolverines!

The basketball
season is open
once again
By CRAIG MUCKLE
Loyal sport fans of the hard
wood, its that time of year again.
The time for the fancy dribblers,
high jumping rebounders and
most important, the good shoot
ers, we here at Morris Brown
look forward to a very good sea
son.
Coach Dolan Falconer, who will
be starting his sixth season as
head basketball mentor said that
“this team has better all around
talent” than the team of last year.
Falconer considers this as being
a rebuilding year, due to the loss
of two of his big men, Leroy Batts
and Issac Howard.
This year Morris Brown will be
playing a much tougher schedule
than before. They must face such
teams as defending conference
champs SAVANNAH STATE,
AUGUSTA COLLEGE, TENNES
SEE STATE, CLARK COLLEGE
and MOREHOUSE.- According to
Falconer “there is not too much
let up on the schedule, any team
in this league is capable of beat
ing you on any given night.”
SUPPORT
YOUR
BASKETBALL
TEAM!
By Robert Reese
Early in the season No. 1 Quar
terback for the purple machine,
Gregory Thompson, was immo
bilized by the Alabama State de
fense. Thompson suffered a
broken jaw and severly cut lip.
He was hospitalized for two weeks
and required numerous stitches
and silver wiring to hold his
mouth together. Meanwhile Ron
ald Lawrence took over and did
a creditable job of guiding the
squad. A lesser man would have
succumbed and been declared out
for the season. Greg Thompson
has a fervent passion for the
game, it’s not like a game to him
but more or less a way of life —
fast, climatic, anti-climatic, re
warding frustrating and involved.
He was so involved until he ig
nored his physical status and
practiced and played (sporadical
ly) despite his adverse circum
stances. This writer has had the
opportunity of seeing Thompson
grow from a scrawny bow-legged
kid who would do anything to
an all-city defensive back for
Atlanta’s Washington High School.
Upon entering M.B.C. Thompson
seemed to have matured over the
course of one summer by the
time his freshman football season
arived. Thompson was the Wolve
rines No. 1 signal caller. This
was the first time in a long time
that an Atlanta boy had played
quarterback for Morris Brown
College. It was noticed also that
a lot of non-college people were
attending M.B.C.’s games even
more than the usual number and
it was attributed to the fact that
between Thompson, Bruce Smith,
and Charlie Daniels, the Washing
ton High School trio, local people
were coming to see them. Thomp
son didn’t let his injury get him
down, he took it in stride realiz
ing that life has its ups and
downs and that the moment you
start remorsing you’re doing your
self more harm than good.
Thompson made a very brief ap
pearance in the Florida A & M
game which the Wolverines won,
and although it was only for one
play it was a mental victory for
him which speeded his physical
victory.
Then came the Thanksgiving
Day Clasic, the encounter with
Clark College and Thompson
took over the controls of the Pur
ple Machine and although he was
rusty and even eratic at times,
he along with Michael Banks,
“Bo Dill,” and the irrepressible
Larry Henderson, pulled it out.
Thompson has been injury prone
since he’s been here and this is
his junior season (just completed)
and it’s doubtful if he has played
in ten (10) games over the span
of these three seasons. With all
that has been said the Wolverine
Observer takes this time to salute
a courageous and dedicated young
man, Gregory Thompson.
It is hoped that Thompson can
shake off his injury jinx and
lead the Wolverines to a success
ful championship season next
year.
At this juncture the Wolverine
Cagers have played four games
and have lost four games. The
latest defeat came at the hands
of West Georgia College out of
Cavrollton, Georgia. The final
score being 87-85.
The only bright spots in the
Wolverine attack that particular
night were Michael Derricotte,
a freshman guard from Atlanta’s
Price High School who scored
22 points and James Townsend
a hustler supreme from Laurel,
Mississippi. We’re sure things will
get better as time progresses.
A group of athletes here at Mor
ris Brown have formed a service
club, and the name of this club
is the Purple Knights. The Knights
have elected as their president
Novel Goff, a linebacker on the
M.B.C. squad.
The Knights sponsored a talent
and fashion show which was ultra
successful as their first activity.
Many happy returns, Purple
Knights.
Wolverines
get it together
The Wolverine Cagers captured
their first victory of the season
against a good Paine College
team. Up until this the fifth
(5th) game of the season the
Wolverines were simply not play
ing basketball, something that re
sembled basketball maybe but
not basketball.
Then in a contest against West
Georgia (which they should have
won) the M.B.C. Cagers began
to put it together and freshman
whiz Michael Derricotte begon to
find the form that he used to
take his Price High team to the
quarter-finals of the State High
School Basketball tournament
year before last, erricotte was
hitting from all areas on the court
and his deft passing gave him
at least a half-dozen assists. Then
there was Jerome (Gator) Mur
ray who scored some key baskets
and grabbed some vital rebounds.
We can’t overlook Sylvester
Hickson who did a' mammoth
job on the backboards (at both
ends of the court), Calvin Davis
also played a good game. The
next game before the holiday
break is against the Maroon and
White Tigers of Morehouse Col
lege, How will it go?
Freshman guard Wagstaff.
Coach Abrams
Shows Steady
Improvement
The Wolverines won three
games last year, they won four
this year and will win at least
five next year if things go as
they have been going. Although
Abrams hasn’t had a winning
season since he’s been here, he
has shown a steady rate of im
provement. And with this in mind
we can rest in the knowledge
that real soon M.B.C. will field
a winning football team.
The Green Bay Dynakty as
built by Vince Lombardi didn’t
go up over night, it was a slow
meticoulous and tedious process,.
Coach Abrams is about half
way thru his building job and
based on some of the young play
ers that came in last year and
this year he’s headed in the right
direction.
