Opera At MBC
By Derrick Weathers
Hie National Opera Corn-
presented their produc
tion of La Boheme by
Giacomo Puccini. Performing
in Cunningham Auditorium,
the Opera Company gave an
outstanding performance to
the students of Morris Brown
College. This musical produc
tion demonstrated the ver
satility of singing and acting in
the classic and extravagant art
of opera.
The National Opera Com
pany, formerly The Grass
Roots Opera, was founded in
1948 by A.F. Fletcher of
Raleigh, North Carolina.
Their production have three
major aims: (1) to give ex
perience to young singers and
actors, (2) to give the public
the opportunity to hear opera
in its own language, (3) to in
troduce opera as a classical art
form.
"A bore is a person who talks
when you wish him to listen."
Ambrose Bierce
The company has toured 36
states, performing over 2,000
times, always singing in
English. Some of the former
singers now appear in leading
roles in the leading opera
houses of this country and
Europe. Some have also been
seen in recent nationally
televised opera productions.
The National Opera Com
pany exhibits the grace and
versatility, of acting and
singing in the beautiful and
traditional form of opera.

Extra! Extra!

Take 2 cups of headaches, 5
tablespoons of deadlines,
lOlbs. of ink, 7 dashes of
creativity and what do you
have? The Morris Brown
College Wolverine Observer
staff.
It is time to let the Morris
Brown public know just what
the dedicated workers do
behind the big wooden doors.
Many people will be surprised
to discover that the staff con
sist of approximately nine
members, and are amatures to
the field, but enjoy par
ticipating in the different areas
of the paper. Besides the
young staff, there has recently
been a change in faculty ad
visors. The new faculty ad
visor is Ms. Donda West, also
a faculty member of the
English Department.
The new changes have made
this 1979-80 year more or less
a time of trial and error. But in
the future the staff hopes to
vastly improve and increase
the editions to two per month.
The paper is not only
distributed to the M.B.C.
public, but also to several
other colleges and> ft
organizations throughout the
United States.

designed for the people (mid
dle class) to keep them middle
class. It becomes the major toll
for shaping orderly, law
abiding, industrious, respec
table human beings. But
these purposes like most pur
poses of the mass middle and
lower classes educational
systems is defeated.
This is not to make the
library look or sound bad. It is
somewhat a suggestion to the
staff that is asked to be given
consideration. After all, what
would we do with it? Or
any library as far as that goes.
One way to gain other
suggestions, opinions, or even
solutions is to set up a
suggestion box to be filled by
the students and faculty. Then
maybe in a short run the ad
ministration can come up with
a final decision.
I do not want to be lagging
behind the rest of the world.
We must adjust as a school, as
a black historical institution of
higher learning, to the ad
vanced aggressive and more
technical enviroment.
- Education -

Bureaucracy is the breath of
life for our learning institution
and unfortunately for too
other institutions in our
society. I can only say that the
institutions will die in this
"pool" of bureaucracy.
If students take advantage
of a system that is going to in
crease their options then the
great value "Of our people con
I will get booed for this but I
understand Morris Brown
College has its tradition and its
values. However, surely I
think M.B.C. needs to adapt
its functions and priorities to
now and the future. What I
mean is some of our ways here
are old fashioned.
I hope the 80's will bring
new life and meaning to us,
the Wolverine Family of
Morris Brown College.
