(L-R): Valetta R. Wayne, Morgan E. Dixon, Ms. Kathleen Battle, Janel E. Riley, Courtney D. Clark.
By Morgan E. Dixon
aturday night, September 13, four
young ladies, members of Delta
Omicron International Professional Music
Fraternity, Inc., had an experience of a
lifetime. Ms. Kathleen Battle, world fam
ous opera singer and African American
trailblazer, was in concert at the Woodruff
Arts Center with the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra. This was the opening concert
for the 1997-98 season and a kick-off
event for the Atlanta Arts Festival.
Senior, Courtney Clark; Graduating Senior,
Morgan Dixon; Senior, Janel Riley; and
Graduating Senior, Valetta Wayne were in
attendance for the regal affair to greet
their sister of Delta Omicron.
The ladies witnessed the renowned
singer in rare form, including five encore
selections. After the concert, Ms. Battle
invited them backstage where the ladies
presented her with flowers, received her
autograph, and took photographs. This
was a wonderful experience that they will
never forget.
Delta Omicron is an International
Professional Music Fraternity that began
in Cincinnati, OH at the Conservatory of
Music on September 6, 1909. Chapters are
national and international with members
in Korea and Japan, as well as the
United States.
The Morris Brown chapter, Gamma
Beta, was chartered February 18, 1973 and
revived again in 1991 by advisor and life
long member Dr. Toni Anderson. Chapter
activities include tutoring music students,
choir and band leadership and support,
and singing at school convocations and
community events. The chapter currently
has over twenty active student members
and four faculty members.
Some activities to be on the lookout for
during this school year include “Movie
Nights” showing West Side Story, Little
Shop of Horrors, and School Daze (9/25
and 11/17); also a “Step Showcase” for the
Music Organizations (Homecoming Week
10/3), a faculty recital in late November
and holiday caroling in December.
This project is the first of its kind in
the state of Georgia and for Historically
Black Colleges and Universities.
Implementation of such a program will
increase investment in an educated and
energetic workforce, school reform, and
attitude changes for people with special
needs. “Allowing students from the
Atlanta Public School Exceptional
Children Program to interact in a college
setting while acquiring job training
skills will not only strengthen their self
esteem, social interaction, communica
tion and employment skills, but will
provide opportunities for attitudinal
changes for the college as well,” states

Our motto for the 1997-98 year is
“Striving for Excellence”. Our upcoming
projects will pursue a Bone Marrow drive
through the American Red Cross, GPTV
educational endowment drive, and annual
MAA trip to Baltimore, Maryland, January
7-10, 1998. We are setting the foundation
for our future endeavors in mathematics. In
favor of our members only, MAA will offer
the opportunity of grants, scholarships,
interim and career knowledge to best suit the
needs of undergraduate and graduate studies.
Every semester we recruit at Wolvee
Week and in the New Students Orientation
class. Applications can be picked up in the
math lab located in the Griffin-Hightower
Building. Please note there is an application
fee. We believe that with unity accomplish
