Morris Brown Outbound

Last summer, with Olympic distractions
on campus, Morris Brown was forced to
move around southwest Atlanta to hold
preseason football practice.
Coach Joe Crosby plans a different
approach this summer, and will take the
Wolverines to Rock Eagle campsite in
Eatonton, GA for ten days.
CHANGING PLACES
Former Morris Brown Wolverine
comerback Sol Brannan ‘64 has
returned to become defensive back coach.
Brannan, a member of the Kansas City
Chiefs’ 1970 Super Bowl team, joins former
Clark Atlanta head coach Willie Hunter on
Crosby’s staff at Morris Brown. Hunter will
be the Wolverines’ offensive line coach.
“I’m delighted that Coach Crosby feels
that I can help the program at my alma mater
where my wife (Delores Jean Brannan ‘67,
Executive Director of the Sickle Cell
Foundation of Georgia), a son. and a
daughter went to school.”
FREDD ADDS A POSITION
Cecil Fredd ‘63 has been named athletic
facilities director by Mr. Gene Bright. Mr.
Fredd will maintain his position as the
department’s equipment manager.
Alumni Update
Necrology
Christine Frazer Garfield ‘58 had
retired from the Atlanta Public School
System where she had been a special
education instructor. She was funeralized at
Union Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. Mrs.
Garfield was an active member with the
Women for MBC organization.
Alva Elizabeth Chappelle ‘49 taught in
Butler and Atlanta, GA as an elementary
school teacher. She was active in the Irene
Harris Service Guild at Allen Temple AME
Church in Atlanta, and with the Atlanta Phi
Beta Sigma Shadows.
David T. Allison ‘51 was a retired middle
school teacher with the Atlanta Public
School System.
Georgia Ann Brown Curtis ‘60 was the
Job Training Partnership Act Coordinator
at the Augusta Technical Institute. She was
a member ofZeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.,
and Bethel AME Church in Augusta, GA.
Rudean Lumpkin ‘50 majored in
business administration, and earned a
master of Psychiatry Social Work from
Atlanta University. After teaching at Morris
Brown College, he was employed by the
correctional system in Illinois. He returned
to Atlanta to study at Atlanta University, and
moved to Los Angeles, CA where he retired
as a social worker in 1982.
Henry Woodard ‘52, was one of the early
black postal executives in Atlanta. During
his 40-year career, Mr. Woodard was a
permanent member of the Postmaster's
General Selection Board, and once served
as the officer in charge of the Athens, GA
Post Office. At the time of his retirement in
1988, he was the general manager of the
Atlanta Bulk Mail Center. Mr. Woodard
was a World War II Army veteran, a member
of the NAACP, Alpha Kappa Delta National
Honor Society, National Association of
Postal Workers, and the Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc. He was funeralized at
Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in
College Park, GA.
Virginia Hood Thornhill ‘64 died in July
1997. She was employed by the Atlanta
Board of Education as a teacher.
Earl A. Starling ‘39, earned his masters
in sacred music from Columbia University,
and his doctorate of education from
Wilberforce University (OH). He did post
graduate studies at Atlanta and Boston
Universities.
Dr. Starling began his professional career
at Morris Brown where he taught music and
educational psychology. He became the
band master and teacher at B. T. Washing
ton High School, and later principal of
Campbell Elementary in Atlanta. He taught
and consulted with various institutions of
higher learning and several churches
throughout his career.
A past president of the National Alumni
Association ’s Atlanta chapter, Dr. Starling
was also a member of Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity, Inc.
William S. Lucas, Sr. ‘43 of Hazel Crest.
IL, retired from the Fulton Count)’ (GA)
school system after serving as its first
African-American superintendent of Title III
programs, a principal of Fairburn High
School, and teaching at South Fulton High.
Mr. Lucas earned master degrees from
Atlanta University in mathematics and
educational administration. He served in
the Air Force during World War II.
Svlvania W. Woods, Sr. ‘49, a World
War II veteran returned to earn his business
administration degree and did graduate
studies at Atlanta University. He worked
briefly as a police officer in Washington,
DC. Later, while working full time for the
U.S. Postal Service, he earned his juris
doctorate from The American University.
He practiced law in Washington, DC and
Prince George '$ County, and was active in
numerous profesisonal and civic
organizations. He was appointed to the
District Court of Maryland Bench, where he
served for 18 years. He was scheduled to
retire as a Maryland Circuit Court judge on
his 70th birthday, August 4, 1997.
Elizabeth Peyton Richmond ‘39 retired
from teaching in houston County, GA and
moved to Columbus, GA. She was active
with the Columbus-Phenix City Alumni
Chapter, Columbus Business and
Professional Women, Senior Citizens
Volunteer, and a member of Hosley
Monumental CME Church. Mrs. Richmond
was a consistent donor to Morris Brown
College.
Pre-Alumni Honored
The Coalition of 100 Black Women of
Atlanta, Inc. recognized Miss Monica K.
Dukes ‘99 for her volunteerism at their First
Annual “Unsung Heroines” Banquet.
Miss Dukes, is a sophomore majoring in
Early Childhood Development, and for more
than two years has consistently volunteered
as an Aid at Sci-Trek and SpelmanCollege’s
nursery.
PRi-AIUMNI COUNCIL
The members of the Morris Brown
Pre-Alumni Council held its first meeting for
the 1997-98 school year on September 9,
1997.
The students are working to help support
