WINS New Car in
Scholarship Raffle

Italy
M orris Brown College’s
j own Racquel Watson was
9 9 9^ accepted to an Art and
Design School in Cortona, Italy.
Racquel is the first student from
Morris Brown College to be admitted
to the program. Furthermore, she is
one out of one-hundred students
chosen from a national pool of over
200 applicants. Last month,
Racquel’s work was displayed in the
annual Benedict College HBCU’s Art
Invitational. She was the only per
son selected in the Atlanta Univer
sity Center to submit her work.
Racquel’s efforts are to raise
$10,000.00 by May 15, 1998 to
support her efforts to attend the
UGA Studies Aboard Program at
Cortona, Italy. There has been
a scholarship fund established
at Capitol City Bank & Trust
Company, located at 1-20 and Lee
Street in the West End. For more

Wesson Ml "Chefs of
Tomorrow*’ Scholarship
ATLANTA - Morris Brown College
alumna Dr. Nellie W. Adams is the
proud new owner of a 1997 white
Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS, thanks to
the National Oldsmobile Marketing
Association and the Bryant Gum-
bel/UNCF Golf Classic. The auto
mobile was awarded to Morris
Brown as a raffle prize by NBA stars
Bill Russell and John Havlicek who
participated in the golf tournament
on behalf of the College last fall. The
campus car raffle raised $15,000 to
wards student scholarships for
Morris Brown.
Adams, who purchased 100 raffle
tickets, was shocked to hear her
winning ticket announced at Morris
Brown College’s 117 th Founders Day
Celebration on March 5, 1998.
“It was a big and pleasant sur
prise,” says Dr. Adams, “That’s the
only vehicle I have in operation, so it
came at a good time.”
Adams, a 1950 graduate of Morris
Brown, is a long-time supporter of
the institution. “Morris Brown has
done so much as far as my being
what I am today. I am indebted to
the College. Whatever I can do to
uplift the school I will do. That’s my
driving force, Adams says.
Adams’ new car originally was
provided to the UNCF by the na
tional Oldsmobile Marketing Asso
ciation. The car was the grand prize
at the Bryant Gumbel/UNCF Golf
Classic held last year at Disney
World.
Russell and Havlicek were a team
during the Classic and selected Mor
ris Brown as the UNCF college they
would represent in the fundraising
golf tournament. Their expertise on
the golf course netted them the
grand prize Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS.

HBCU Technical
Assistance Conference
Jackson State University will be
the host institution for the Second
Annual Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUS) Technical
Assistance Conference Monday and
Tuesday, May 18 - 19, in Jackson.
The conference will bring together
key U.S. Department of Labor
/Employment and Training Admini
stration (USDOL/ETA) officials,
presidents and representatives of the
nation’s HBCUs, and state and local
governmental agency leaders in a
collaborative effort to enhance the
working relationship among the
groups and advance USDOL goals.
Focusing on the theme, “Working
Together to Create and Strengthen
Partnerships,” the conference is de
signed to increase opportunities for
HBCUs to participate in DOL/ETA
workforce initiatives, information
exchange, partnership development
and program planning.
There is no registration fee for the
conference, which will be held at the
Crowne Plaza Hotel, 200 E. Amite
St., Jackson. For reservations, call

Brown College, is one of four grand
prize winners of the Wesson Oil
$20,000 :Chefs of Tomorrow”
Sweepstakes. Grand prize winners
were randomly selected in a national
drawing among eligible entrants.
Each will receive a $5,000
scholarship to a culinary school,
trade school, college or university to
pursue a degree or certificate in a
food-related area such as food
science, nutritional science, culinary
science, hospitality, or home
economics.
In addition to the “Chefs of To
morrow” scholarship prizes, Wesson
Oil has awarded more than $16,000
in scholarships to colleges and
universities that hosted the Wesson
Oil City-Wide Chicken FryFest
Finals - an 11-city grassroots pro
motion program that celebrated the
legacy and unique-ness of African
American cooking through fried
chicken competitions among local
churches.
The following Morris Brown
students received a Wesson Oil
“Heart and Soul of Good Food”
Educational Assistance Scholar
ship in the amount of $750 each:
Chantanell T. Carmichael from
Pomona, California and Audra D.
Love, of College Park, Georgia. Both
are juniors majoring in Hospitality
Administration. Selections were
based on academic performance,
participation in department
sponsored events and organizations,
and part-time employment in the
hospitality industry.
