Let’s Be Thankful
BY RITA BROWN
Probably one of the best lov
ed holidays observed in the
United States today is Thanks
giving. The first Thanksgiv
ing was observed by the Pil
grims who came to the state of
Massachusetts on the Mayflow
er. When they harvested their
first crops, they prepared a
large feast and gave thanks to
God.
Today Thanksgiving is cele
brated with family gatherings
and lots of food. Everyone
gathers around the table and
overloads their plates with the
usual Thanksgiving food: juicy
turkey, sweet potato pie, cran
berry sauce, and turkey dress
ing smothered in steaming hot
gravy.
As we think of Thanksgiving
we also think of the month of
November as well. This month
is thought of as the Christmas
planning and shopping time.
As visions of Christmas pop
into our heads, the scene of
family gatherings around a hot
crackling . fireplace is again
brought to memory. Just as
Christmas brings gifts and the
dawning of a new year,
Thanksgiving harvests thank
ful and grateful hearts.
Since the first Thanksgiving,
our land has prospered and
grown in many ways. People
have fought hard to receive
their freedom and advance in
the world. Do not take for
granted.things, .that other peo
ple are not as fortunate to
have. Stop and take time to
be thankful to God that you
have them.
DEAR HEXY
Help !! I don’ know what
to do. The boy I love is very
mad at me about nothing. He
is constantly hurting me too.
I wish, in a way, that I could
get out of this rut and forget
him. But I know it isn’t pos
sible because I truly love him
and want to be with him. It
hurts to stay where I am and
it will hurt to leave. Also I
can’t drop him while he is mad
at me. I would never be able
to stand it. What can I do?
Hurt.
Dear Hurt,
People very seldom get an
gry for no reason(s) at all.
Search your memory and see
if you have “hurt” him in
some unintentional way. You
have answered your own prob
lem; if you really love him you
would want to stick with him
through good and bad, sun
shine or rain and through per
iods of problems you both may
encounter. Secondly, his an
gry fits may be a way of tell
ing you that he is tired of you.
Hexy.
Dear Hexy,
I have a problem! My boy
friend keep® talking about the
birds and the bees and I have
asked my parents what he
means but they just turn red
and tell me to go to my room
Please help me!! What do
do when my boyfriend starts
talking to me and moving clos
er to me muttering something
about birds and bees?
Confused.
Dear Confused,
First of all we found it hard
to believe that you are not
aware of the old “birds and the
bees’- tales. All we can advise
you to do is to have a serious
talk with your parents before
something happens that you all
may regret. If they still refuse
to tell you, then, your only so
lution is to seek professional
(medical) advice.
Hexy.
Dear Hexy,
I need some help as quickly
as I can get it before I make
a mistake. My problem is that
I have been going steady with
this certain boy for about a
year and I broke with him be
cause I wanted to date other
boys, so that’s what I did.
Later on he started messing
around with my best friend in
front of me. It really upset me
to see him carry on like this.
I think I want him back but
I’m not sure. He says- he
wants me back and that it’s
over between him and my
friend. What .should I do? I
think f want him back, but I’m
not sure. Please don’t just say
be sure.
Need Help.
Dear Need,
Since it was you that broke
off the romance in the first
place you really have no rea
son to complain. Your prob
lem is that, you hate to see
your Ex paying attention to
other girls. You’re dating oth
er boys may be a sign of inse
curity and an over inflated
ego that can only be satisfied
by many dates. Your love
so changeable that you can not
really call it love. We advise
you to date- one steady boy for
a period of time and see how
things work out.
Good luck.
Hexy.

Responsibility —
Let’s Accept It
‘! \ BY JULIE GRIMES
'Everyone talks about re
sponsibilty but how many peo
ple really do something about
it? Often I hear talk about
how only a certain small group
of students run the school ■
those in leadership jobs in the
school government, clubs,
spirit groups, and athletics.
Have you ever stopped to
think why these people are in
the positions they hold? I
feel that it’s because they
know the meaning of responsi
bility and are willing to work
to change or better conditions.
If these people didn’t feel it
their duty to carry out their
esponsibilities, there would be
no football or basketball
teams, no cheerleaders, no
clubs, no Student Council, no
annual, and no newspaper.
The people in these positions
must surely tire of the count
less number of hours which
they put in when there are so
many other people at E.C.H.S.
who show talent and good
ideas that could be put to work
sharing the responsibilities for
a better school. I would like
to see more names on the list
of volunteer work for the
many activitiesi of our school
and we feel that you the stu
dents will stand up to face
these responsibilities.

The Test of Life
Life often tests us in many
unexpected ways, as witnessed
by the following story: “Some
time ago a young sailor called
his parents after his release
from military service-. He said
he was bringing his buddy
home with him to stay. ‘You
see, Mom, he said, ‘my friend
is pretty badly broken up. He
was severely wounded and has
only one leg, one arm and one
eye,’ After a little reflection,
the mother said grudgingly,
‘Of course, son, he can stay
with us a little while.’ Her
voice carried the -message that
they would not like to be bur
dened very long with such a
severely handicapped fellow.
“Two days later they receiv
ed a telegram from the gen
eral’s office, saying their son
had plunged to his death from
a hotel window.
“When his body arrived for
burial, his parents noted he
had only one arm, one leg, and
one eye 1 ! The memory of her
last conversation will linger
■with that mother as long as
she lives. She often cries out,
‘Oh, why didn’t I speak more
carefully, more lovingly? But
it’s too late now’.” — Copied.
