"The Liberating Power of Stories - Gay Male Fiction and Literary Criticism" Great Valley B Facilitator: J. Michael Clark, M.Div., Ph.D. This workshop will examine the importance of reclaiming our group experience, through gay fiction, as an empowering source for our efforts toward gay liberation, while also elucidating some of the problems which arise for those individuals who are developing a gay literary critical method. NAMES Project Piedmont Room Facilitator: Ken Kimsey, Staff Support NAMES ProjectX Director of Development, AID Atlanta An overview of the Memorial Day Weekend visit of the NAMES Quilt to Atlanta on May 29-30,1988. Videotape presentations of the Quilt's inaugural display at the March on Washington in October 1987 and a feature story on Cleve Jones, creator of the project. "The Workplace and You" Suwanee Room Facilitator: Michael Roland Discussion of being lesbian and gay in the workplace. Topics will include: to be closeted or not; benefits; being part of management; and more. "Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays" Atlanta 4 Facilitator: Lauretta Rouse, President P-FLAG A panel discussion by parents and friends of Lesbians and Gays. Audience participation welcome. "How Can 1 Work With Them if 1 Can't Even Talk to Them?" Coastal Room Facilitator: Sue Hyde, Director, Privacy Project, N.G.L.T.F. Workshop examines the pleasures, obstacles, pitfalls and rewards in mixed gender/race organizing. A facilitated discussion. "Assertiveness Training" Great Valley'A Facilitator: F. Arme Brown Experimental training session for men and women to encourage open and honest authentic expression of Self using assertiveness skills. Workshop will explore blocks to assertiveness through definition of terms, exercises to overcome blocks and empower the individual. "Self-Care for Care Providers: Taking Care of Ourselves and Surviving the Epidemic" Atlanta 3 Facilitator: James L. Sacco, M.S.W. A workshop designed to assist people involved in AIDS service to work to identify certain inherent stressors, to acknowledge their personal struggles, and to identify the significance of self-promoting behavior in their lives. Atlantal Facilitators: Sabrina Sojoumer/Larry Lucas A group discussion on sexism in the lesbian/gay community through an exploration of the myths and prejudices between lesbians and gay Men. Dick, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology A workshop for ACOAs or similarly dysfunctional families. Workshop will include: Meditations-movement meditations-art as meditation-creativity through play-humor- spirituality as fun dance-yoga-breathwork. "Atlanta 88" Piedmont Room Facilitator: Christine R. Riddiough, Executive Director, National Association Gay/Lesbian Democratic Clubs This workshop will focus on the activities in Atlanta during the 1988 Democratic National Convention in July. The workshop will provide participants with an outline of planned events, including the caucus of L/G delegates and will help suggest ways for people to participate. Sabrina Sojourner A workshop on self-esteem. "Gay Spirituality and Theology: Claiming the Past, Envisioning the Future" Coastal Room Facilitator: J. Michael Clark, M.Div., Ph.D. Examines the development of resources for gay spirituality, apart from institutionalized religion, including mythological archetypes, the native American berdache, gay St. Aelred's "theology of passionate friendship," feminist theology, and the impact of AIDS, as well as sketching an outline for how we might develop an assertive gay liberation theology simultaneously drawing upon the Judeo- Christian tradition while refuting its homophobic institutionalized manifestations. Open discussion to follow presentation. "Writing Plays With Your Community" Piedmont Room Facilitator: Rebecca Ranson Playwright Ranson explores writing plays with your community about issues and concerns within the community. Ranson is the writer of "WARREN,” one of the first AIDS plays in the country and has developed a method of responding to issues through the arts. 1 Noon -1:30 p.m. LUNCH On Your Own 1:45-3:15 p.m. WORKSHOP SESSION VII 'The Golden Gays" Great Valley A/B Facilitators: Miriam Carroll and Marsha M. "Why Do We Need A Lesbian/Gay Synagogue" Atlanta 1 Facilitator: Robin Joy Brown, Bet Haverim Congregation Workshop will include a short history of Bet Haverim Gay and Lesbian Synagogue. Addresses issues such as: Why we need a lesbian/gay Synagogue and what Kurt Rahn "Parenting" Atlanta 1 Facilitator Leigh VanderEls A panel discussion with parents in a variety of parenting situations. Topics: legal issues, insemination, coming out to your children, maintaining long-distance relationships with your children* "Homophobia: Its Power for Paralysis" Atlanta 4 Facilitator: Jack Ahlers, Ph.D. This workshop will attempt to identify the self destructive forces of homophobia within our culture and those feelings directed at ourselves. By working through it, we can discover a renewed sense of what we are about and where we might be going. 'The Buddy V olunteer Program" Atlanta 3 Facilitator: Jim Knoll-AID Atlanta Buddy Captain Coordinator Workshop will include a discussion of the role of a Buddy. Participants will divide into small groups and give case studies. A presentation of how the program is coordinated with the agency and administered by volunteers. "Organizing and Maintaining A Gay/Lesbian Alumni/ae Atlanta 4 Organization" Facilitator: Steve Snell, Chair - William & Mary GALA Workshop will explae how to aganize, establish and maintain a gay/lesbian alumni/ae organization. "AIDS: What's Happening Now - Private and Federal Views" Atlanta 3 Facilitata: Wayne Nidiffer, Ed.D., AID Atlanta Robert Barnes, CDC An overview of the most recent developments in AIDS from both the private aganizations and Federal agency.
