KEEP REFRIGERATED
Dish
there's a fine line between telling the truth and talking trash
Lambda on My Lens
The mainstream media continues to go on (and off) about
the "gross errors" and other such terms used to describe
the supposed grinding flaw in the lens of the Hubble tele
scope. Obviously, unlike Dish, they were not present at
the recent S.E. Women's Comedy and Music Festival.
Had they been there then they, too, would know that one
of the lesbian technicians who worked on the Hubble
'scope decorated the part that was her responsibility with
scores of tiny, painted lambda's. The message here is
clear: Hubble's true mission is to scout out safe spaces for
lesbians and gays; and until it is used in the way the
Goddess intended, Dish thinks there is little hope that the
$1.5 billion dollar boondoggle will see with clarity.
Confirmed Rumor Mill
Austin (Texas) based lesbian rockers Girls in the
Nose—fresh from performances at Rhythm Fest—will be
in town for three performances September 5 (at the
Point), September 6 (at The Otherside) and September
7(at The Variety Playhouse). Look for more next issue.
And "in the nose" is not a drug reference, but Dishy read
ers will no doubt have much fun trying to figure out
exactly what it does mean.
Drag Ken
Dish loves this. Ken, of Barbie and Ken fame, turns out to
be a cross-dresser. Seems that somehow (how, we won
der?) a Ken doll showed up, factory sealed, at a Tampa
Toys 'R' Us dressed in a "purple tank top and lace apron
over a turquoise and purple skirt." Could this start a new
fashion trend? Or will Ken become the national poster
boy for crossdressers everywhere?
...And Rita Makes Three
Dish finds it difficult to get excited about the fact that
Georgian's will get to choose between Zell Miller and
Johnny Issakson this fall—the election of either offers
visions of all North Georgia turned into a huge weekend
resort community peppered with red, white and blue for-sale
signs. What we are excited about is Rita Valenti's run-off
victory in House District 52. Combined with Sherry Sutton's
and Jackie Scott's stunning victories in the primary, Valenti's
win makes Dish sleep a bit more soundly at night.. .and
mighty happy to be a DeKalb resident.
Change not Charity
Dish was pleased to see Joan Gamer and her partner at the
Fund for Southern Community's 10th Anniversary bash
two weekends ago. The multi-talented Ms. G. it seems has
joined the FSC staff and will work in the area of develop
ment— elsewhere that might mean fundraising, at the
Fund it has far broader implications. Also spotted at the
birthday bash: Byllye Avery of the National Black
Women's Health Project; Mayor Emma Gresham from
Keysville, GA; and Joe Herzenberg, well-known lesbian
and gay rights activist from Chapel Hill. State Rep. Nan
Orrock (she who introduced the Hate Crimes Bill in the
last session of the legislature) was, of course,
present—she's the Fund’s Executive Director.
Political (In)correctitude?
Overheard in the Southern Voice office last week: A les
bian humming the tune to "Having My Baby."
Setting Goals
Joan Gamer, Jay Neely, and Maury Weil—collectively
known as the "Senior Advisors (to the Mayor) from the
Lesbian and Gay Community"—have met with hizzhonor
for the first time. The discussion was said to be "extremely
positive." Included in the discussion were police matters,
the appointment of an openly gay staff member and the
appointment of gay men and lesbians to City Boards and
Commissions. The three advisors will meet bimonthly with
Mr. Jackson; the creation of a "goals paper" will be among
their first task. If you have input for the advisors feel free
to contact Weil at 378-2189 or leave a message for Neely
at First MCC, 872-2246. At deadline we could not confirm
a contact number for Joan Gamer. Check this space next
issue for that info.
