Spritual Riches
From Debbie's degree in Interpersonal
Communication first came positions in
sales and marketing—her fundraising tal
ents helped get a public radio station up
and running.
While the work was rewarding, Debbie
realized that another path lay before
her—one revealed in the form of a dream.
In that dream, a friend repaid a small debt
to Debbie by investing it for her and mak
ing her rich. The investment? An introduc
tory class in Alchemical Hypnotherapy at
the Heartwood Institute of Healing
Arts—a community of like-minded folks,
miles from civilization in California.
Alchemical Hypnotherapy involves look
ing at the causes for behaviors rather than
just dealing with the symptoms.
Debbie later worked with David
Quigley, the founder of the Alchemical
Therapy Institute in Santa Rosa, California
and became an authorized trainer through
that facility. Her clients and students attest
to her warmth, perception and humor in
dealing with their process and training.
The dream is now reality and the
investment a handsome payback of spiritu
al riches.
Miller Boycott
Cont'd from page 3
Though Miller's Reed insists that "the
monetary message against Miller Brewing
Co. [due to the boycott] will be insignificant
to Philip Morris as a whole," Haskell
believes that finances are not the central
issue.
"All this talk about money developed out
of Miller's P.R.—out of their misinformation
campaign. They made money the issue,"
declares Haskell.
There is more to it than the money, sup
porters say—there's the message.
"This is something we can all get behind
and work together on.... We can send a mes
sage to Philip Morris, and, ultimately, to
Jesse Helms, that we just aren't going to take
it anymore. This gives us a way to fight
back," explains Monroe.
Some bar owners maintain that the
choice to boycott belongs to each individual,
and that they will not force their personal
decision on their customers.
William Wayboum, former president of
the DGA, agrees with the principle. Indeed,
he says, "It's not the bars that make the deci
sion, it's the patrons." That is exactly what
happened in Dallas.
"We have a responsibility to our commu
nity," says Denis Weir, CEO of Caven
Enterprises, owner of six lesbian/gay night
clubs in Dallas. "If you want me to sell your
beer in my club, then you convince my cus
tomers not to be angry with me for selling
Miller beer."
In Milwaukee, Miller's home town, the
boycott is the subject of scorn by a majority
of the lesbian/gay community. Says Terry
Broughner, executive editor of Milwaukee's
gay and lesbian paper, the Wisconsin Light,
"We feel that this is not the way to neat a
friend."
Sentiments in Atlanta appear to echo
those in Milwaukee. The Armory, which is
not a B.O.A. member, is the only bar where
patrons have reported that Miller is not
being served. ACT UP/Atlanta has agreed to
support the boycott. But, because of its
impending action against Wal-Mart's cap on
HIV insurance claims and lack of boycott
support from bar owners, the activist group
has indicated that the Miller action does not
top its priority list at this time.
There is no cure for HIV. But there are treatment options. The AIDS/HIV Treatment Directory, published by
the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR), is a "user-friendly" guide to the full range of approved
and experimental treatments. A subscription to the Directory is the best way to receive this information
regularly. A subscription is also an ideal way to support the efforts of AmFAR to raise funds to underwrite
research and education about HIV disease. A one-year subscription (4 issues) is only $30.00. To subscribe,
or to moke a contribution, send your check to AmFAR. Your options may be greater than you think.
