KEEP REFRIGERATED
Dish
there's a fine line between telling the truth and talking trash
Keeping a PACE: Dish was moved to tears recently as she
went shopping at the Norcross PACE Membership
Warehouse with local volunteer and activist extraordinaire
Mark du Pont. On this particular day, DuPont decided to
upgrade his membership. He proceeded to fill in his hus
band’s info on the application, fully expecting to be dis
missed from this Gwinnett establishment. After processing
the application, the cleric on duty asked, “Is your spouse
with you today?” To which Mark replied, “No, he's at
home.” “Well,” the clerk continued, “give him this slip of
paper and when he comes here next time, we'll issue his per
manent card.” In view of the recent incidents directed
against us by other companies, Dish thinks we should con
gratulate PACE on their extraordinary acceptance.
Rumor Has It: Dish has been hearing for months rumors
of the return of Atlanta's first and sometimes only out les
bian rock-n-roll band. And then came the flyer for the
Southern Women's Music & Comedy Fest with Moral
Hazard scheduled for Friday night. Could it be? Apparently
so. The Hazards, now in their 10th year, are also scheduled
to play The Otherside on Sunday, April 7. Now, what's this
we hear about an album-length cassette tape?
A.K. Phone Home?: A coalition of lesbian and gay
activists is looking for one (or more) openly gay man or les
bian to run for retiring Rep. John Lupton's seat in an upcom
ing special election. The candidate(s) must have lived in
District 25 and "have more brains than Vincent Wall and be
less sexist than Bill Lee" say the organizers of the effort.
Women and people of color are especially urged to run for
the post. Dish wonders if A.K., B.S., or F.L. will respond
—any one of them could win in a heartbeat. Call 377-8312
or 688-1954 for more info if this tickles your fancy.
Dyke Power: Dish was downright impressed with the
cover of the S.F. Examiner’s March 10 edition of their
Sunday magazine, Image. Then we looked inside and read
the story. Wow and zowie! Eight pages of hot, hot pictures
accompanied by a well-reasoned, well-constructed, well-writ
ten story about dykes in a mainstream Sunday mag? And all
the tired old J-C gives us is the ever more gutless and glamor
less Parade. Call this reason #457 that queers move to San
Francisco.
Calling GLAAD: Dish sure does hope that the local chapter of
the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has Channel
11 on its "to call" list. First there was the station's recent cover
age of the Douglasville Cracker Barrel demo where the folks
from WXIA reported incorrectly that the Lebanon, Tenn.,
bigots had rescinded their homophobic employment policy.
Then came last Friday night's well-intentioned but almost
silly story on gay bashing—hung on the report of a man
who evidently got AIDS as the result of his ongoing and
brutal punching out of gay men (see page 5). The straw that
broke the camel's back was Steen Miles question to a gay
man (who had never been bashed): "What would you say if
you could talk to a homophobic?" Dish wants to know is
that the singular or plural? Or maybe it's the past-pluperfect.
Karma Comes Home: Dish is proud to have survived the
Mr. & Mrs. Southeast Leather Contests—but just barely. 4.5
hours to judge 4 contestants? We know beauty contests are
supposed to be tacky, but PLEASE! Atlantans were victori
ous in both contests—congrats to Wes Decker and MP
Breslin. Highlights included Wes' heartfelt speech about
being gay-bashed and MP's inclusive and erotic "initiation
by fire" ritual fantasy. Talk about HOT! And kudos to Guy
Baldwin, '89 International Mr. Leather, who raised over
$300 in what he called "the most satisfying impromptu
fundraiser I have ever been involved with." For $10 a
whack, audience members got the chance to smack the
behind of contest organizer Robert Sheets. Watching all that
karma make such a quick turnaround was truly festive. Not
to wish any ill to Mr. Sheets' posterior, but when you show
your ass in public, you can expect it to get whacked.
Oh Stanley!: Kowalski that is. Is Dish the only one who
still watches the gloriously giggly Entertainment Tonight?
And are we the only one who noticed last week's episode on
which Mr. Kowalski's.. .er, Brando's.. .ex wife outed the
oftimes petulant star? The ex-Mrs. B.told the E.T.'s bright
eyed interviewer that Marlon's tendencies had wrecked their
marriage and were at the cause of son Christian's shooting
his sister's boyfriend. Dish seems to remember an old rumor
about a picture of Wally Cox and Brando.. .anybody else
heard that one?
