Dish
there's a fine line between telling the truth and talking trash
Opportunity Knocks: It's been some weeks now since
the folks at the big paper down on Marietta Street took soci
ety/gossip maven Martha Woodham off of the Peach Buzz
column and moved her back to doings on the Society
(excuse us, the High Style) pages. Now we notice that the
always effervescent (and often incandescent) Ms. Martha
(not to be confused with Martha Stewart, please) is penning
a new column: Newlyweds, a brief, albeit somewhat pre
cious, profile of a recently hitched metro area couple. Dish
thinks that this is the perfect opportunity for newly-together
lesbian or gay male couples to have their relationships rec
ognized by the J/C. We know Ms. Woodham has friends in
our community, mayhaps they will lobby her on this idea
whose time has most assuredly arrived.
Eyes Right!: It's has been some months now since Army
Reservist Donna Jackson came out to her Commanding
Officer as her unit prepared to ship out to the Middle East in
support of the creation of preppy Pres. Geo. Bush's "new
world order." (Dish fails to understand what's "new" when
millions of kids and civilians suffer because the power boys
want to posture while they play, but we always have been
kinda killjoy about bombs and stuff.) Anyway, Jackson—
discharged on Jan. 17 in retaliation for her blatant honesty—
has a new career as a model. Check the latest edition of the
lesbian erotic journal, On Our Backs, for a three-page spread
on the ex-soldier in various states of seductive (military)
undress.
Role Model?: Ex D.C. Mayor Marion Barry says he has
given up drugs and sexism. Well, at least that's what a head
line in die A-J/C said last week. Barry himself spoke of giv
ing up "womanizing" and becoming interested in the "totali
ty of a woman, not just her body." Dish has always been
sure that vices of the spirit (like sexism, racism and horn-
phobia) were probably just as addictive as those substances
we sip, smoke and snort, it's just that few who are so hooked
ever admit it. Maybe the (at least publicly) repentant Mr.
Barry will start a 12-step group for others who objectify
women? Or maybe he'll start a support circle for politicians
who seem to have problems telling the truth. Just think of
the size of the hall they'd have to rent to hold the meetings
of either group. Could be a productive off-season use for the
new, domed stadium now lurching into the downtown skyline.
Wise Words: Dish congratulates Atlantan Cal Gough co-edi
tor of the incredibly complete and eminently usable book Gay
and and Lesbian Library Service, which received a runner-up
award in the 1990 Gay/Lesbian Book Awards from the
American Library Association. We use our copy almost daily.
More good news from the stacks: The L.A. Public Library (the
nation's 2d largest) is the first in the country to establish an
annual Gay and Lesbian History Month. (It's in June of
course.) Public libraries everywhere are, of course, an
immensely valuable resource for young men and women in the
throes of discovering their sexuality. The pride month displays
planned at many of L.A.'s 63 library branches are an idea
which deserves duplication.
Strange Bedfellows: Don't you love it? HHS Secretary
Louis Sullivan has asked sports fans and promoters to boy
cott sporting events sponsored by tobacco companies. (Pres.
Bush has, natch, distanced himself from the idea with all the
alacrity of a Izod alligator scurrying off to a swamp in Jesse
Helmsland.) Sullivan is (rightfully) concerned that such pro
motion encourages impressionable kids to use addictive
substances which will "ruin their health and send them to an
early grave." Presumably this would mean that Sullivan sup
ports boycotting events sponsored by Marlboro and that
(since alcohol is also addictive) his concept might be
extended to events sponsored by Miller beer. Does a
Marlboro/Miller Boycott sound familiar to you? It does to
Dish. Maybe Sullivan could put the squeeze on promoters to
seek event sponsorship from condom manufacturers.
ACT UP Stands Up Ralph: Poor Ralph from Ben Hill of
WGST radio, was ever so disappointed when ACT UP did
not show at his broadcast on April 15 from the Buckhead
post office. As far as we can tell our local radicals never
planned to visit Ralph. We checked with Queer Nation too
in case Ralph got his groups confused, and they had no such
plans either. In case you haven't heard him, or heard about
him via other local rags, Ralph makes it a habit on his
evening talk show on WGST to spew his incomprehensible
and just plain stupid views about queers. During the April
15 broadcast Ralph told his listeners, more than once, that
ACT UP was coming and for them to "come on down and
help him out." Dish wonders just what kind of help Ralphie
meant, especially when he told one listener that ACT UP
had "snipers in the building across the street." We'd like to
help Ralph - to the nearest therapist.
Mona Rules: Dish and all the folks at SoVo want to give a
big hug, kiss and thank you to Mona Bennett for her two-
year volunteership here. Happy anniversary, Mona! Mona
snaps pix, answers the phone, gets your subscription out to
you and does a hundred other tasks that help keep the press
es rolling. While we're on the subject, many thanks to all
our volunteers for all the work they do. Couldn't do it with
out you.

The Sun is in the fixed earth sign of Taurus until May 21 and Mercury goes into direc t motion on April 28, so sign important papers after that date.
ARIES-With Mercury going direct in your
1st house on the 28th, you may feel some
relief from having to deal with
details and other tedious things,
but you do need to stay focused
and not distracted by just any
thing interesting.
TAURUS-Happy Earthday! Taurus symbol
izes the beauty and fertility of the Earth, so be
sure to celebrate your special
relationship with the planet and
the natural world. Be ground
ed, but not entrenched and have
some fun!
GEMINI-Mars is now in your 2nd house of
material resources and personal income mak
ing this a good time to focus on
your goals and projected needs
for the next two years. Have a
good sense of direction before
going into hyperdrive.
CANCER-With Mars in your 1st house of
personality opposing Uranus and Neptune in
your 7th house of relation
ships, you may feel some ten
sion with close friends or part
ners. Be sure to express your
thoughts, hopes and worries.
LEO-With Mars now moving through your
12th house of dreams/visions and the uncon
scious, your sleep may be very
active and you may be spend
ing more time daydreaming.
Pay attention, keep a journal
and learn about yourself.
VIRGO-With the Sun in your 9th house of
foreign travel, new perspectives and meta

to shake loose of your routine
and do something wild and
adventurous for fun and per
sonal growth. Go for it.
LIBRA-With Saturn moving slowly and
methodically through your 5th house of fun,
creativity, play and passion,
you may feel a little constrict
ed or pressured by time. Don't
get the Saturn blues, but do get
organized and prioritized.
SCORPIO-Mars is now cruising your 9th
house of new perspectives and metaphysical
studies, so travel to exotic
places may be in order or, at
least, a trip to the beach. Be
open for growth in your aware
ness and understanding.
SAGITTARIUS-With Mercury direct in
your 5th house of creativity/fun and Jupiter
expanding everything in your
9th house of metaphysics, you
may need to act your creative
urges and begin to build your
dreams into concrete reality.
CAPRICORN-With Mars in your 7th house
of close friends and partners, opposing
Uranus and Neptune your 1st
house of personality and self
awareness, you may have con

others and having time for self.
AQUARIUS-Don't let Saturn in your 1st
house of personality and self-awareness turn
you into a grouch or a troll
under the bridge. Use Saturn
to organize and prioritize your
personal life. Avoid worry and
being critical of anyone.
PISCES-Satum is now moving slowly and
ponderously through your 12th house of the
unconscious mind, so pay
attention to dreams to increase
your awareness and under
standing of yourself and your
inner motivations.
