How to Spend Your Summer Vacation
by Patsy Lynch
Ah, the sweet smells of Spring. The flowers are bloom
ing, the bees are stinging and you and your love are trying
not to kill each other while deciding how to spend the
summer. Last year, you wanted to work in the garden
while she trudged all over the country with her softball
team. You both vowed to spend more time together, even
going so far as getting brochures from that Women's pro
duction company that is now promoting cruises as well as
records.
Now that summer is here, your plans are once again up
in the air. Maybe there are a few things you can do togeth
er. How about golf? Sure you think it's a stupid game, but
hundreds if not thousands of women play or at least watch
while others play. The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf
Association) has weekend tournaments which seem to
attract an ever-growing number of women. The biggest
draw seems to be the Dinah Shore Nabisco Golf Classic in
Palm Spring, CA. Often called "The Desert Dyke Clasic"
this tournament brings thousands of women out. Other
LPGA tournaments include the Sara Lee Classic in
Tennessee in May, the Mazda LPGA Championship in
Maryland in June and the U.S. Women's Open
Championship which takes place in Ft. Worth, TX July 11
14. For further listings, contact your local golf pro or the
LPGA in Florida.
If golf is not your style, there are the ever popular
music festivals. Starting around Memorial Day weekend,
the SWMCF (Southern Women's Music and Comedy
Festival) in GA to the Michigan Women's Music Festival
in August, you will find hundreds of women gathering to
listen to "name performers" and local singers hoping to be
discovered. (See sidebar for a complete listing and contact
information.) In addition to the music, you can rediscover
those long lost camping skills and commune with nature
au naturale. Of course, you can also browse through the
craft fairs, pick up another pair of earrings and for the real
ly daring, get a long desired but afraid to apply, tattoo.
For those on a tight budget, or for whom the call of
nature is limited to bathroom needs, check out your local
gay/lesbian Pride march. Here you can walk with your
friends, show your solidarity with the community and run
the chance of appearing on the local news. Well, you had
been planning to come out to your family.
Finally, there is the old standby: softball. Every sum
mer, bats, balls and gloves are hauled out of the closet,
oiled or varnished and readied for action. Evenings are
filled with the sounds of pings, grunts and cheers as young
and not so young Amazons rush around the ball field.
Spectating is as much of the sport as playing. Who else is
going to offer support or a hug when one wins or loses? In
Atlanta, Hotlanta Softball plays every Sunday in
Piedmont Park beginning at 11 am.
Or check out Hotlanta Soccer at 577-0418 or Hotlanta
Volleyball at 875-0700. And Atlanta Venture Sports offers
a wide variety of sporting activities. You can reach them at
2424899. Tennis buffs call Atlanta Team Tennis at 622-
GAME. All skill levels are welcome. For you runners and
walkers call Front Runners at 622-0739 and plan to run in
the 5k race that kicks off Pride this year.
Not interested in sports? Take a walk or a ride in the
car. Visit the local museums or attend a concert in the
park. Go to the beach or work on your suntan. Spend the
day in bed alone, with your cat/dog or lover. Your options
are limited as much by imagination as your budget. It's
summertime and the living is supposed to be easy.
If nature beckons you this summer check out
the schedule for the women's festivals.
