AID Atlanta Cutting Costs
Citing a "significant decrease in grant funds, gifts, and donations," AID Atlanta announced
on June 3 that it is trimming its staff to cut costs. Executive Director Sandra Thurman said
that the agency remains committed to its mission of providing services to the community,
and that all case manager and other direct client contact positions are being maintained.
Video Club Raided: Back Alley Video on Cheshire Bridge Road was raided last week,
with police confiscating 1600 allegedly pornographic tapes. Owner Ed Chitty says that the
store is still open for business.
Man Slashed In Morningside: A 27 year old Villa Rica man was badly injured in an
apparent robbery attack on May 20. The man, who requested that his name not be used,
said he believed he was struck in the head while getting out of his car at the Cove and driv
en a few blocks away. He was repeatedly slashed with a box knife while struggling with the
perpetrator, who demanded his watch and ring. The victim was taken to Grady Hospital
with multiple cuts on the face, head, back, arms and legs. Police have no leads in the case,
although several witnesses said that the perpetrator drove a white Pontiac Sunbird.
ALFA Decides To Keep Talking: At a potluck discussion on June 8, thirty-seven les
bians took up the issue of the Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance's future. After months of
declining interest and funds, ALFA announced the meeting to "see what women wanted to
do." According to ALFA member Betty Irwin, most present wanted the 19 year old organi
zation to continue, but with some changes. No decisions were reached on exactly what kind
of changes were needed, but Irwin was encouraged by the response. "I feel positive," she
said, "but who knows? Whatever happens, we gave it a shot." Another discussion meeting
is planned for 7 pm on June 26 at the ALFA house. At the ALFA general meeting on June
9, 15 women made plans for Lesbian/Gay Pride participation, and announced ALFA's 19th
birthday party, to be held on July 20.

GA NOW Elects Lesbian: The Georgia National Organization for Women elected an
open lesbian as its president on June 1. Samantha Claar, who had been president of Atlanta
NOW, is currently co-chair of the publicity committee for the Atlanta Lesbian/Gay Pride
Committee. Goldy Chriscuolo and Charlotte Gillis will be acting co-chairs of Atlanta
NOW until the September elections.
Baptists Criticize Bush, CDC: The Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Atlanta
last week, issued two resolutions aimed at "immorality." The first resolution criticized
President Bush for not firing NEA Chairman John Frohnmayer, and the second called on
the federal government to "refuse any government funds to groups or programs which
encourage sexual immorality in any form." That resolution was prompted by a $25,000
grant from the Centers for Disease Control to support the HIV Prevention portion of the
National AIDS/HIV Forum and National Lesbian and Gay Health Conference scheduled for
July in New Orleans.

can't hide; your politics mean genocide,"
and unfurled a banner reading "Fight AIDS
Not People" before being detained by Secret
Service Agents. Outside 150 protesters criti
cized the President's reverse of an earlier
promise to drop HIV infection from the list
of diseases used to bar people from entering
the U.S. Demonstrators also protested the
President's actions on AIDS, civil rights,
abortion, health care, and freedom of
expression.
Lesbian Ordained Episcopal Priest: The Episcopal Bishop of Washington ordained a
44 year old lesbian on June 5. Bishop Ronald H. Haines said that he ordained Elizabeth
Carl after much "soul-searching," and that while "sexual relations outside of marriage trou
ble me greatly," Carl has "for a number of years openly lived in a loving and intimate rela
tionship with another woman." The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the Most
Rev. Edmond L. Browning, was said to be "surprised and upset."
Presbyterians Reject Task Force Report: The General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) rejected a 200-page report that recommended ordaining homosexuals and
condoned sexual relationships outside marriage. The Presbyterians gathering accepted a
second report that affirmed die "sanctity of...one man and one woman" and reaffirmed the
Assembly's 1978 position that "homosexuality is not God's wish for humanity." After the
vote, several hundred supporters of the original report marched silently through the meeting
hall. The General Assembly also called on congregations to continue to study sexual ethics
issues.
Congress Told That AIDS Definition Excludes Women: The House Government
Operations Committee's Human Resources Subcommittee opened hearings on June 6
regarding women and AIDS. Witnesses told Congress that the standard definition of AIDS
does not take into account many of the symptoms experienced by women. Other witnesses
reported that an increasing number of AIDS patients are women, up to about 12% in 1990.
