John Mark Hess
John Mark Hess, 40, died Aug. 8 after an
inspirational struggle with AIDS.
Mark was bom January 31,1953 in Illinois,
the son of the late Mary Alice Hughes Hess and
the late Robert Royce Hess. Surviving is his
companion, Claud Gray, and his devoted brother,
James Clark Hess.
After moving to Atlanta in 1979, Mark took
a position with Abstein Gallery and was gallery
director when he left in 1989. He was a central
figure in the visual arts community, working on
many private and corporate art collections
throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area.
Mark will best be remembered for his lust of
life, unsurpassed cheery disposition, romanti
cized story telling, dreams of the North Carolina
coast, childlike anticipation of Halloween and
Christmas and the love of his 13-year compan
ion, Claud Gray.

Rakesh Ratti speaks at Emory
The Office of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Life at
Emory University presents a lecture/discussion,
“The Colors of Our Rainbow: Celebrating the
Diversity of the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Com
munity,” by Rakesh Ratti, writer, activist, and
editor of “A Lotus of Another Color: An Un
folding of the South Asian Gay and Lesbian
Experience.” The event will be held on Thurs
day, Sept. 23 in White Hall, Room 207 on
Emory’s campus at 8 p.m.
Operation Isaiah Food Drive
When Atlanta’s Jewish community observes
the high holy days by bringing bags of groceries
to Kol Nidre services Friday night, Sept. 24.,
Atlanta’s gay and lesbian Jewish congregation
Bet Haverim will participate in Operation Isaiah
this year for the first time.
Food collected by Bet Haverim will be dis
tributed by the AUanta Community Food Bank
to non-profit agencies who assist those in need.
Special blue and white Operation Isaiah bags
will be distributed to congregants, students and
members at the start of Rosh Hashana with in
structions to fill them with non-perishable food
items and bring them to Kol Nidre services or
earlier during the week. Desired items include
canned fish, canned vegetables and fruit, soup,
pasta and staples.
Group for gay counselors
Gay and lesbian grad students and profes
sionals in counseling, psychology and social work
are invited to attend an organizational meeting
to form a social and community service group.
The meeting will be held Sunday, Sept. 26,3:30
p.m. at Quaker Atlanta Friends Meeting, 701 W.
Howard Ave., Decatur.
