Obituaries
Dorian Corey, a New York City drag
performer who gained fame for his starring
role in the 1991 film “Paris in Burning,” died
August 29 in New York City of ADDS compli
cations (New York Times). Stefan
Fitterman, a stage director and producer who
served as founding director of the St. Louis
Ensemble, and most recently produced “The
Cloud in Trousers” for Vanessa Redgrave at
Circle in the Square Theater in New York
City, died August 1 of AIDS complications.
Place of death was not reported. His compan
ion was Sid Pinkerton (Variety).
Ted Matthews, 41, a 20-year San Fran
cisco gay activist who helped found Bay Area
Gay Liberation in the 1970s and Lesbians and
Gays Against Intervention in the 1980s, and
also appeared in Peter Adair’s late 1970s film
“Word is Out,” died July 17 of AIDS compli
cations. Place of death was not reported (Bay
Area Reporter). Mark Tindell, 37, well-
known British painter who volunteered to give
gay sensitivity training to police cadets and
officers, died June 13. Place and cause of
death were not reported (Capital Gay).
John Spencer West, 37, a Hollywood
public relations executive who organized pub
licity campaigns for such films as “Postcards
from the Edge” and “Hairspray,” and for such
“Paris is Burning” star Dorian Corey died
August 29.
actors as Liza Minnelli and Michelle Pfeiffer,
died July 24 of AIDS complications. Place of
death was not reported. His partner was Tom
Gibson (Update). Jim Yestadt, 41, the se
nior project designer for teams that revised the
MasterCard logo, packaging for such Sterling
Drug products as Midol and Panadol, and iden
tity programs for Bell Atlantic and Discover
Card Services, died July 14 in Fire Island,
N.Y. of AIDS complications. His partner was
Richard Barbieri (New York Times).
