Lambda Community Center

going to cost S3 million,” said Debbie Frakcr,
chair of the outreach committee and former head
of the research and design committee. “But we
decided we’d rather open a center next year and
raise 5500,000.”
With that S500,000 goal, the group expects
the center will open its doors in June 1994. The
committee is still in search of a building, al
though they seem to be focusing on acquisition
of Bass High School in Little Five Points. The
vacant school would be ideal for several rea
sons—it’s in a good location and has plenty of
open and confined space with outdoor grounds
for recreation. Besides, it has already proven to
be a safe and sound home to Project Open Hand.
Frakcr emphasizes the need for immediate
dedication, support and enthusiasm from the
community and various organizations.
“We all hear people saying it’s a great idea
on an individual level,” Fraker says. “Now we
need a rallying of organizations. It’s important
that the community take on the responsibility
for the center, whether that means writing a
check or showing up physically. Right now it
means both.”
The driving force of this effort has been and
will need to continue to be the involvement of
community organizations. At present, people in
volved directly represent the diversity of
Atlanta’s gay and lesbian community. For that
reason, a PBS documentary film crew, which is
working on a documentary about community
centers, has, according to Archbold, decided to
use the Lambda Center as the model community
center of the future in their program.
Recent developments include the acquisi
tion in August of a small office within the 14th
Street Playhouse for development purposes. And
fundraising efforts are coming into full swing. A
benefit in conjunction with “Falsettos” raised
$6,000, and a new Major Donor Campaign has
already produced pledges of S30,000.

Horsemen: Dobson

talks a good line about the values those families
need—values like honesty and respect—but
when it comes down to the bottom line, there is,
for Dobson, only one kind of family. Take this
letter, from Jamie Bloor in Los Angeles, to Fo
cus on the Family Magazine, and the editor’s
reply:
“Could we have stories about gay families? I
just returned from my nephew’s house, and I
was so impressed. He and his male friend are
raising a daughter from a previous marriage.
They take her to church every Sunday, and bless
ings are said before every meal. Your readers
should know about some of these ‘alternative
families’ that are members of Jesus’ family, too.”
“Editor’s reply: We appreciate your sugges
tion, Jamie, but we don’t see a way to do what
you ask. It’s our position, based on Scripture,
that the Maker of families did not include homo
sexual groupings in His master plan for house
holds—and that’s what we try to follow and
promote at Focus on the Family. If you’d like
more information, please write us.”
It’s that simple. Don’t even ask about alter
natives. There are none. Our way is best. And
Dr, Dobson will happily tell you all about it.
