And that’s Elvis Costello, the British rocker who made melancholy cool and got me through those angst-filled college years when I was a twentysomething Generation X-er and didn’t know it. This week, Elvis plays his old and new stuff at Chastain Park in one of the coolest line-ups of the summer. That Canadian band, Crash Test Dummies opens for the king. The Dummies are relatively new to the Making It Big scene and are sometimes referred to as a “thinking man’s R.E.M.” They’ve got a style all their own. Who else can name a song the let ter “m” and get away with it? Sun day, June 19 under the stars with your feet kicked up on your very own cooler. The out door festival, which takes place under a circus tent at Oglethorpe University, features picnic gardens, pre-show entertainment and on-site catering. Opening Friday, June 17 is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Also look for “The Merchant of Venice” and “The Imaginary Invalid” (by Molier) in the Festival Season run ning through August 7. Call their box office for specifics, 264-0020. • They say Shakespeare himself was gay, but I’m not sure who says that. Historians or other gay people? Either way, one man who is gay and who has laid his life on the line because of it is Dr. Luiz Mott. Amnesty International Group 75, the Atlanta chapter of the worldwide human rights orga nization is sponsoring the Brazilian professor on his 8-city lecturing tour of the United States. Dr. Mott will speak on his experience documenting human rights abuses against gay men and lesbians in Brazil—including some 1,200 mur ders committed since 1980. Friday, June 17, 7:30pm at the First Existentialist Congregation of Atlanta in Candler Park. This event is free and open to the public. Congratulations go out to Amnesty International for their campaign, “Breaking the Silence” specifically aimed toward putting an end to human rights violations based on sexual orientation. An interesting comparative experience might be a meet ing with Michelangelo Signorile, author of “Queer in America,” Signorile will be signing copies of his recent book at Outwrite Books, Midtown Promenade 7:30-8:30pm Sunday, June 19, and Oxford Books, Pharr Road, 7-8:30pm Monday, June 20. Be “Footloose and Smoke-Free with the AFWC;” why do I feel like a cheerleader just now. That’s the Atlanta Feminist Women’s Chorus and they invite everyone to join them for country western dancing at the First Existentialist Congregation every Wednesday in June. Learn to lead and/ or follow. Two-step lessons at 7:30pm, open dancing at 8:00pm. Tuesday, June 21, is comedy Tuesday at Revolution. The already popular bar continues to make strides by intro ducing a weekly lighter side to the increasingly political aspects of being gay or lesbian; or should I say: come to Revolution on Tuesdays; it’s fun for the heterosexually chal lenged. And if that’s not enough of a laugh, be sure to attend some part of the 18th Annual Atlanta Film and Video Festi val running through June 20. My favorite, cartoons, will be shown Thursday, June 6 at the Garden Hilis Cinema at 2835 Peachtree. What is actually very sophisticated animation will include Karl Steven’s “The Critic(s),” Lynn Smith’s “Pearl’s Diner,” and Yaron Zohar’s “Sexual Disarray Among Non-Secular Buddhist Monks.” Just when you think you’ve seen it all. Are you a slave to fashion? Who’s not, really. Whether you don wigs, sequins, Wranglers, leather chaps, or just clothes, 800 East, the Multidisciplinary Art Center with the address on its name is presenting a rare one-day-only exhibit on Friday, June 18, entitled Slaves to Fashion. The mixed media exhibit by Charlotte, NC artist Willie Little, as a reviewer noted in a Cleveland Gallery, “eloquently requires us to reexamine the tyranny of the American Beauty Cul ture.” Mr. Little’s work is being exhibited in conjunction with the Supra Natural Style Show, 1994. It’s an evening that features the work of a dozen fashion designers, hundreds of models, performers and a pulsing groove of a DJ duo and two bands, Swirl and Harper Fragment. Not to mention the hostesses, trapeze artists, and jugglers. Who knew all this was going on? Thanks for the tip, DISH. Feel Good About Dairy Again.
