THEATRE, DANCES ART REVIEWS
by MICHAEL RAPE
The best on the boards in '94
I'm tired. I've been to the the
atre 133 times this year. Now it's
time to look back on all that I saw.
Best Performances, Actress:
Shelley McCook ("Laughing
Wild/' Alliance); Sarah Lancaster
("Titus Andronicus," Atlanta
Shakespeare Company). Both ac
tresses delivered wonderful per
formances, one comic, one deadly
serious, in difficult material. Hon
orable Mention: Rachel Fowler
("Philadelphia Story," Actor's Ex
press).
Best Performances, Actor:
Peter Ganim ("Man & Superman,"
Actor's Express). An absolutely
Carol Channing as Dolly was the highlight
of the Fox musical season.
stunning performance—just per
fect. Honorable mention: Edwin
Ashurst ("Present Laughter,"
Neighborhood Playhouse), Jeroy
Hannah ("The Night Larry Kramer
Kissed Me," SAME).
Best Supporting Perfor
mances, Actress: Kim Salome
("Tarts," E/R Christmas), Lauren
Gunderson ("Philadelphia Story")
Best Supporting Perfor
mances, Actor: Theo Harness
("Cloud Nine"), David Milford
("Of Mice and Men")
Best Musical Performances,
Actress: The cast of" A...My Name
Is Still Alice." Don't ask me to split
apart an ensemble like this.
Best Musical Performances,
Acton Daniel L. Came ("A Little
Night Music"); Bryan Mercer
("Children of Jazz").
Set Design: Rochelle Barker
("Vampyr," Theatrical Outfit).
Without question, the most amaz
ing set of the year.
Lighting Design: P. Hamilton
Shin ("Vampyr"). Again, an amaz
ing design.
Costume Design: Joanna M.
Schmink (many plays). This
woman's costume work is every
where, it seems.
Best Direction: Chris
Coleman ("Man & Superman,"
"Cloud Nine"). Two amazing
pieces of theatre, made all the bet
ter by Coleman's impeccable direc
tion. Very Honorable Mention:
Kenny Leon ("Angels in America,"
"Boys From Syracuse")
Best Shakespeare Produc
tion: "The Winter's Tale" (Theatre
Emory); Honorable Mention:
"Titus Andronicus" (Atlanta
Shakespeare Company).
Best Touring Shows at The
Fox: "Hello, Dolly!" (Carol
Channing really was phenomenal)
and "The Who's Tommy."
"Tommy" was an incredible pro
duction, even though I ultimately
don't like the play all that much.
Best New Work to Debut in
Atlanta: "Many Things Have
Happened Since He Died...And
Here Are the Highlights" (Hori
zon).
Best Place to See Unexpect
edly Good New Works: Discov
ery Arena at Neighborhood Play
house.
Best New Group in Town:
Art Attack (it had a couple of mis
fires, but it is on the right track).
Best Work Which the Other
Critics Loathed: "Mad Forest"
(Theatre Emory). An offbeat, off-
kilter production, it held my inter
est throughout.
Best Work Done by the Alli
ance in a Long Time: "Angels in
America: Millennium Ap
proaches"; Honorable Mention:
"The Boys From Syracuse"
Best Musical: "A..My Name Is
Still Alice" (Horizon). Honorable
Mention: "Whoop Dee Doo"
(Onstage Atlanta)
Best Play: "Man & Superman"
(Actor's Express).
