ATLANTA BARB-Page 7
Entertainer Of The Month
Chattanooga Chatter
The Incomparable Buddy Clark
He is the leader of the
parade! Literally that is.
Buddy has lead most Atlanta
parades down Peachtree St.
He has a long history of
show business behind him
and the road ahead is bright.
Buddy is active in sports.
He won the Ga. State diving
championship; title in 1961,
and was the Georgia High
School first National batan
twirling champ in 1962. He
has appeared on National
TV (Ed Sullivan Show).
In 1966 he was drafted
into the U. S. Army. He
shocked hell out of his peers
as he won every Post title
in the entertainment con
tests, and received the “B
tests, and received the
“Best Entertainer’’ title,
appearing at Posts from
Florida to New York to lead
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
parade. He proved time and
time again that his talents
were diversified and even
water-skied in drag to en
tertain soldiers of 3rd
Army Recreational Center
at Lake Altoona, Atlanta.
His antics can be well
recalled by numerous peo
ple.
Buddy flew in drag as a
Wac in uniform from Augu
sta to Atlanta and was Mil
itary standby too! We’re
sure Uncle Sam will not for
get B. C. and his short -
lived hitch in the Army.
After his Honorable Dis -
charge, Buddy started a
group, the Sir Premes.
“You have to have a
gimmic’’ is Buddy’s motto
and he ingeniously deve
loped one with the group It
was black make-up. Before
retiring the Sir Premes,
had appeared in every
major drag club in the Sou
theast , and were the highest
paid as .well. The night of
their “ farewell perfor
mance”, Buddy and his
group received a plaque in
scribed “To Atlanta Sir
Premes for outstanding en
tertainment and showman -
ship” from Chuck’s Rath
skeller.
In August of 1969 Buddy
produced a Halloween
Beauty Pageant with a 40
ft. runway, 19 finalists and
an audience of 2,000. He has
impersonated the fabulous
Pearl Bailey. In 1969 Pearl
was so amazed and deli
ghted after seeing his per
formance, and enjoying his
impersonation of her in
“Hello Dolly”, that she
threw a July 4th gala South
ern Dinner at her New York
home in his honor. Dionne
Warwicke has dedicated her
Atlanta concert to him.
Buddy has a beautiful ex
pensively decorated home
in Atlanta and his attic is a
combination workshop
and wardrobe room for
his endless array of
glamourous gowns, fea
thers, accessories and
wigs. These gowns, we
might ad, all have indivi
dual satin padded hangers
and everything has its
place.
Budd y Cla rk
Buddy’s wardrome alone
is insured and is in excess
of $25,000. This may sound
exaggerated but if you have
seen his recent one man
concert at the Onyx in May,
then you have seen a sample
of his wardrobe. The gown
that has our female imper
sonators drooling is a copy
of a$4,000 original with so
many dazzling rhinestones
you need sun glasses to
protect your eyes while
viewing it. It has a beauti
ful matching coat, gloves
and shoes to match, of
course. This outfit alone is
insured for $1,000!
Buddy is a remarkable
businessman with an in
come of $100,000, he has
two house shows and a road
show. He books outstanding
talent and is always willing
to lend a helping hand to
potential talent but
to work for Clark Product
ions, you will tow the line.
There are fines for lateness,
abuse of wardrobe, drunk-
eness, and strictly enforced
is the rule of “no dope”.
For missing a show (cir
cumstances considered)
the entertainer can be fined
anywhere from one night’s
salary to termination of
employment. Needless to
say, Mr. Clark doesn’t have
quanity but he sure as hell
demands, and gets quality
performers. His shows
have included such well
known personalities as
Peral Bailee ( Lisa Tre-
mont), of whom Buddy com
mented, “ Peral is very
dear, and very talented, he
is talent!” Carmen del Rio,
Daisy Dalton, Sandy Cher,
Samantha and many many
more. People who have got -
ten to know Buddy,.find that
his personality is a mix
ture of business, profes
sionalism, realism, com -
passion and a wrye sense of
humor.
He was asked one time,
“Are you a homo?” With a
twinkle in his eye, he re -
plied, “Why don’t you go
to bed with me and find
out!” He is a Taurus and
admittedly a perfectionist
as well. “Drag is a bus
iness, not a playground”,
and this attitude has seen
Buddy through 15 years of it
successfully. His interests
in such sports as tennis,
water skeeing, swimming,
ice skating and snow
skeeing, keep him fit. He
has a zest for life and lives
it to its fullest. Buddy is
currently directing and
staging the 1974 Miss Gay
Atlanta pageant to be held
July 22 , at the Sweet
Gum Head.
He is originally from Atl
anta, has travelled a lot, al
ways returning to his home
here.
When asked his greatest
ambition, he answered ,
“I’ve reached my ambition,
at least the first phase of
it.”

Greetings from the Scenic Center of the South! Big
things have been happening here lately - such as - Chatta
nooga now has THREE gay bars! Are you ready? The
Cross Keys is now under new management. Jack and Ric
hard have taken over and are always there to welcome you
The atmosphere is really getting better and Jack and/or
Richard open every day at 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. The
Toy Tiger was opened a few days ago out on Brainerd Rd.
It’s a small place, but very nice and Joyce and Charlie
open every day at 11:00 a.m. The third place, of course,
is Chattanooga’s showplace - The Powder Puff on Main
St.
And speaking of shows - we’ve had some good enter -
tainment there lately. Of course, our own Cher ice Ni
cole heads an all star cast, including Misti Dawn, Lor -
raine North, and Adrian Sanchez. Not forgetting special
talents of Buck (our answer to Atlanta’s Teddy Bear), the
one and only “Trashy” Trisha, beautiful Amber Synclair,
and the sophisticated Diana Carter.
Our out of town celebrities have been nothing but hot.
Last time Daisy was here she brought Allison and Ange
de Marco. All I can say is WOW - what a show! The Kan
Rah girl of the South will be here in a few weeks, as will
some specials from Birmingham, Misti Black and Gaye
Holiday. So, if you’re not doing anjrthing, come see us and
you’ll find Apache Mike, our new disc jockey aiming to
please, Jan and Mark waiting on tables, Rita and Bobby
Sue, who can mix a mean drink and of course, our most
loved performer - Santana.
I’ve heard that a certain queen has a thing for our men
in blue - but , really does she have to meet them on Main
St. at 5:30 a.m.? I don’t know for sure, but I hope that
Trisha found her Atlanta man. It’s also rumored that our
own Misti Dawn has changed from being a madam to being
just one of the girls. I just have one question for Lorraine
- - - are you real?
See you fine people next month. This is your favorite
fag hag saying “Try it - you might like it.”
