The Gay Days We Remember
By Liddia Lipshits
Atlanta has always had
cruising spots but do you
remember the areas that
no longer are cruised.
For many years we
cruised the library down
town. Some nice tricks
worked there and on
occasion a free pick-up
as well. The young
studgicians would frequ
ent the steps of the
library and the parking
lot wall just around the
corner. I drove by one
night and stopped on the
corner to talk to one Hunk.
He was wearing blue levis
and a red shirt. He was
cruising or working there
but just happened to be
walking to a little cafe
near Broad Street. I
asked him if he wanted
to join me for a drink.
I used a line that an old
friend of mine named
Hilda uses a lot. “Let
me put a drink in your
hand and a smile on your
face,’:’ I said. He ac
cepted.
Peachtree at Fifth
used to be quite kicky
just a few years ago.
The wall there was known
•in some circles as the
m«e.t rack. I am sure
that many of you have
memories [ about that
place that you can rem
inisce about!!! Of course
Cypress became more
convenient. Ponce De
Leon at Highland is slip
ping away but many cars
still cruise through on
occasion. I was driving
through with a “sister’ *
one Friday night and we
stopped to talk to one
lad only to have our
car beaten with a chain.
Could you imagine what
he would have done if
we took him with us?
During the day a fav
orite meeting place was
under the clock downtown
near 4 department store.
You have seen the “wri
ting on the wall” that
said ‘‘meet me at the
clock at... ” I check
ed that spot out one day
and met some heavy peo
ple there. The thing was
to ride the bus and talk.
Then you would meet
somewhere later for a
frolic in the sack. Of
course many cruise bars
are no longer available
for that competitive
sport. To name a few,
Chuck’s Rathskeller, The
Cruise Quarters, Pea
ches Back Door, Frank-
ensteins Cave, The Upp
er Room, The Hideaway,
Mad Laura’s Magical
Theatre, The Alibi, and
many more. Well, we
have many new places to
cruise now, perhaps not
as muich fun to cruise
but still worth the sport
of it. 'So cruise on girl
and pick-up one for me.
I’ll be seeing you on
that street named after
a tropical tree where the
fruits frequent to get
their chicken or maybe
at that jplace where when
I say meet me at my
house it ten you may
end up elsewhere.

Torture!!
What s Keeping The Boys?
I’m Getting In Shape !
I Ask The Doctor I
Q. What would be your
opinion of closet cases?
A. My opinion is that they
are insecure people w ho
perhaps don’t have the
facility to withstand the
ridicule and persecutions
that the other gays have
to endure. I feel that this
is not only related to their
sexuality but these people
would tend to be insecure
in many other facets, be
it their political beliefs,
or opinion on mode of
dress. In otherwords
there are some leaders
who are confident of
themselves, and there are
some people who are fol
lowers.
The ask the Doctor
column is written by a
