What is it that I hear this day?
Ihy bravest men are falling,
Where art thou tribes of Israel,
Is not the trumpet calling?
Where are the tribes, the mighty
hordes?
That stopped the Sun on
high ?
Can you not stop the flow of
blood—
Will you stand by and sigh?
The tribe of Reuben, where art
thou ?
The tribe of Simeon, are you
there ?
The tribes of Judah, Issachar,
The tribes of Joseph, Gad,
Asher ?
Zebulun — where hast thou
gone ?
Benjamin, who fearest none—
Naphtali, rub off thy slumber—
And mighty Don, you will not
shun ?
And Levi, hast thou watched
with care
The charge bestowed upon
thee ?
The testimony—is it safe?
Will you defend, or flee?
O, mighty tribes, thou scattered
are
Like stars across the sky—
t’anst thou not hear the feeble
voice—
Canst thou not hear the cry?
I'anst thou not see the Temple
wall
Submerged, below a flood?
I ht* last remembrance of thy
past
Is covered up with blood—

dust
Or do I see a marching band ?
They seem so strong, this
marching band.
Why look—there is no end—
As far and wide as I can see
They come from all the land.
And now the sky is getting dark
And lightning rends the air,
And mighty peals of thunder
Seem to come from every
where.
What is this, my Lord, what’s
this I see;
The Dead are coming up—
The graves come gently open
And leave them at the top.
I see, and hear them rattle
The bones of those who were;
They seem to grow together
And now a trumpet’s blare—
Re-echoes thro the earth and
sky,
From mountain’s peaks to
shore.
I see no dead, but living men
On thousands, more and more.
With eyes bright they look
away
And on to Mount Sinai,
From whence a voice seems to
come
And angels from the sky—
Try I might, I cannot see—
The glory blinds my eyes—
I hear a voice close to me—
It comes right from the skies:
Shma Yisroel, I thy God!
Have come to resurrect thee.
The Covenant is not forgot,
’Tis I will set you free.
