Bill Aimed at Jews
Cape Town, South Africa—An im
migration restriction bill, presented
in the South African House of As
sembly, is designed to discourage the
immigration into the country of
people from Eastern Europe, partic
ularly Jews. When the bill came up
for its second reading the govern
ment was sustained by a vote of 72
to 40 on a resolution to adjourn the
debate, and it is expected that the
bill will finally be passed by a large
majority. The Jewish communities of
South Africa are vigorously protest
ing the bill. That it is aimed at Jews
has been freely admitted by legisla
tive leaders. In explaining the bill
I). F. Malan, Minister of Railways,
speaking for the government, said
that no stigma was attached to .lews,
but each country should be free to
control its population. Patrick Dun
can, another member of the House,
said that too many jews were in the
country.

Head of Spanish Chamber of
Commerce Opposes Jews’
Entrance
Madrid—Extreme opposition to the
plan to admit Jews wholesale into
Spain has been expressed by Carlos
Prast, President of the local Chamber
of Commerce, whose specific objection
is against East European Jews. His
comment was made in connection with
the recent conversations between Pri-
mo de Revera, Spanish Dictator, and
a New York Jewish editor, when a
general invitation to Jewish immi
grants was issued. “Spain cannot af
ford the Jewish troubles of other
lands,” Prast declared, although he
admitted that wealthy American Jews
could help considerably in the upbuild
ing of Spain.
