Smuts Demands Free Jewish

ernment is pledged, through the Bal

order in Palestine and to permit free

Christian Smuts at a luncheon ten
dered to him here by the Zionist Or
ganization of America. Other speak
ers included Louis Lipsky, Felix M.
Warburg, Dr. Stephen Wise and Mrs.
Robert Szold. Declaring that there
shall be “no pogroms under the Brit
ish flag,” General Smuts stated that
the Balfour Declaration did not mili
tate against Arab interests. He point
ed out that the Arabs had emerged
with many gains from the war.

formula to indicate the voltage of a
lightning surge on an electric power

Jews Ask That Immigration
Laws Be Liberalized
Washington, D. C.—During the past
week the House Immigration Commit
tee heard the testimony of representa
tives of various Jewish organizations
who pleaded that Congress remedy
some of the injustices which are in
flicted by the present immigration
laws. Among those who appeared as
witnesses were Dr. Stephen S. Wise,
representing the American Jewish
Congress; former Representative Na
than D. Perlman, representing the In
dependent Order Brith Abraham, and
Max J. Kohler, representing the
American Jewish Committee. Dr.
Wise urged that aliens entering this
country before July, 1924, be allowed
to register for permanent residence,
asking that the proposed law requir
ing entrance before July, 1921, be dis
carded.
Palestine Riots Seen Part of
World Uprising
New York—That the August dis
turbances in Palestine were but part
of a worldwide revolutionary move
ment whose other manifestations have
been the recent uprisings in Haiti,
India, Egypt and other countries was
declared by M. Olgin, editor of the
Communist Yiddish daily Die Freiheit,
at an anti-Zionist conference of the
Communist Party here.
