TAFT
(Continued From Page 5)
Jewish dominance in Bolshevism, Taft
gave one of the profoundest explana
tions of the Jewish role in the Russian
revolution when he said: “There are
Jews in the Bolshevist cabinet, there
are Jews in some important offices,
but there are Jews who lead the op
posing party of the Mensheviki, the
moderate Socialists. * * * In a coun
try where Jews were subjected to
such bitter cruelty and oppression as
in Russia it is no wonder that they
become anarchists and Socialists, and
took part in the plans for assassina
tion and were made martyrs to the
cause of freedom and resistance to
tyranny. * * *. The Bolshevist Jews
were no more responsible for Bolshe
vism than the others engaged j n it."
If one glances at the American Jew
ish scene during Taft’s administration
one is astounded to see the continu
ous, never-tiring interest of the then
President in Jewish affairs. Especi
ally intimate were his contacts with
the I. O. B’nai B’rith. He addressed
many B’nai B’rith functions, among
them the general convention held at
Washington in 1912. At that particu
lar occasion he revealed that he owed
much of his understanding of the Jew
to Rabbis Wise and Lilienthal of Cin
cinnati. Taft then revealed that “that
distinguished Jew, that learned man,
that patriot and citizen, Rabbi Isaac
M. Wise, and Rabbi Lilienthal were
gentlemen to whom my father taught
me in my childhood to look up to, and
our churches were so close together
that occasionally we interchanged
pulpits.”
When, in 1912, the Executive Com
mittee of the I. 0. B. B. voted a gold
medal to President Taft, which un
der the laws of the order was to be
given to the person who had done the
greatest service to humanity, Presi
dent Adolph Kraus spoke of the se
lection of Taft in the following
words:
“The gold medal to be presented to
the man or woman, regardless of
creed, who has contributed most dur
ing the year to the welfare of the
Jewish cause should go to President
Taft. After full discussion by the
Executive Committee it was decided
that President William Howard Taft
of the United States of America had
on various occasions during the yeai
fearlessly, justly and vigorously enun
ciated doctrines and maintained posi
tions on questions in which the Jewish
people have been vitally interested.”
This expressed the feelings of the
entire Jewish community of the Unit
ed States. The late William Howard
Taft’s friendship and deep under
standing of Jews and Jewish prob
lems were those of a man of high
ethical caliber. In the annals of Jew
ish history his name will go down as
that of one of the great humanitar
ians who came to the aid of the Jew
ish people whenever they were in
need.

recalls the fact that Strauss’ mar
