Federation Relief Department
January and February have been
heavy months. Business conditions
and unemployment have caused an in
creased case load or have depleted
family resources in cases where the
Federation merely supplemented in
sufficient income.
During January the Social Service
Department of the Federation hnd
under its care the following cases:
Relief cases 30
Service cases 24
Transients (relief service) 28
Miscellaneous and incidental serv
ice 32
Total active cases — individuals
and families 114

Total under-care cases 97
The foregoing figures indicate the
volume of work, but do not and can
not show the myriad problems of
family life which had to be consider

problems of behavior, finding individ

FEDERATION MEMBERSHIP
ROLL CALL
Plans are being woked out for the
launching of an extensive Federation
membership enrollment. The failure
of the Community Chest to raise suf
ficient funds with which to finance
adequately the chest agencies has
placed the Federation in a serious
predicament. Either it must devise
immediate ways and means of raising
additional income or it will be com
pelled to curtail materially its intake
of relief cases, shut down some of the
Alliance activities, and in general re
trench all along the line.
The officers and staff of the Fed
eration have one thought in mind, how
to serve the best interests of the Jew
ish community of Atlanta. With this
in view they place the problem
squarely before Atlanta Jewry.
Which choice shall it be—cut serv
ice or increase income ?
This will not be a campaign or
drive for special contributions. No
one will be driven to do anything. No
one will be placed under the spell of
high pressure salesmanship.
Special contributions and donations
are good, but they are not enough.
The Chest allowed the Federation last
year a sum insufficient to meet all its
needs. This year it did worse. It cut
last year's budget twenty per cent,
thereby endangering the very exist
ence of Federation work. The pres
ent Chest appropriation means a con
tinuous operating deficit of five hun
dred dollars a month. This leaving
out of consideration necessary expan
sion and growth.
An institution must grow. It can
not stand still and hope to live. If
the Jewish community of Atlanta is
to prosper and live and grow, its in
stitutions must do likewise.
To make this possible a source of
permanent income and interest must
be found. Everywhere the plan
found most successful is one that
calls for a permanent membership
with annual renewals. Different clas
sifications of membership make for
democratic organization, the mini
mum dues being as low as five dol
lars a year.
Atlanta has established an excel
lent record in pledging and paying its
obligations toward war stricken, im
poverished, European and Palestine
Jewry. We know that Atlanta Jewry
will meet the challenge of allied ef
fort for reconstruction work in Po
land, Russia and Palestine.
Here is a local need that chal
lenges your immediate attention. The
writer feels confident that this chal
lenge will be met fully and now. Let
a united effort face our communal
problems and the word failure will be
driven out of Atlanta.
Federation StafT Council
To coordinate the work of the va
rious departments of Federation ac
tivity, the administration staff has or
ganized into a staff council. This
council meets weekly to hear reports
and to consider difficult problems
faced by the heads of department*.
with situations are but a number of
the many problems which a social
case worker must edeavor to adjust
and solve.
Alliance Activities
New Activities. In the boys’ de
partment the new project all the boy*
are talking about is the organization
of a boys’ dancing class under the di
rection of Miss Jane Boyd, to meet on
Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock. Reg
istrations for same will be received
at the office of the Alliance.
Game Room. New games and im
proved facilities will make the game
room more popular than ever before
—and it is one of the most popular
Alliance activities with Juniors and
Intermediates.
Girls Athletics. Under the able
coaching of Lawrence Rubinstein, a
volunteer worker, who deserves much
credit for his patience and persist
ence, and under the fine leadership of
Sarah Bromberg, as president, the
Alliance G. A. C. won third place in
the City League Basket Ball Tourna
ment. Hope you’ll do better yet next
season. Letters will be awarded to
the team at a future date.
