tains,
1. Four Business Sessions.
2. Two Cultural Sessions.
3. One Alumni Dinner.
4. One Leaders Session.
5. One Banquet.
6. Three Dances.
7. All Day Outing.
8. Tour of the City.
9. Theatre Party.
The business sessions will be short, snappy,
and to the point. Things of no importance will
be ruled out. A different presiding officer will
be at each session, so as to eliminate any
possible chance of one speaker becoming
monotonous.
The cultural sessions are being very carefully
planned. Different leaders will preside over
these meetings, who will introduce a subject for
general discussion.
At the Alumni dinner plans will be made to
launch a regular Southern Interstates Young
Judaean Alumni Organization. It is hoped, and
expected that a very large delegation of tlie old
time Young Judaeans will be present.
The leaders session which is to be held at the
all day outing, will be in the form of a question
box. Leaders are requested to bring up prob
lems which have been bothering them, and they
will be discussed.
The banquet ami stunt night will be held at
the Jewish Educational Alliance. Max M. Cuba
will be toastmaster. Delegates from each city
are requested to prepare a stunt for this night,
and the city having the best presentation will
receive a prize.
All day outing at Idlewood. Don’t forget to
bring your bathing suit.
The Keith’s (ieorgia Theatre has invited the
Young Judaean convention as its guest.
The tour of the city, will cover all points of
interest, such as Stone Mountain, Lyclorama,
Federal Prison, etc.
A Young Judaea Convention
Message
By EDWARD M. KAHN
It is a pleasure indeed to bid the youthful
and enthusiastic delegates welcome to Atlanta,
and, on behalf of the Jewish Educational Alli
ance, to extend to you a hearty Borucn
Habo.”
Young Judaea is part of the Jewish youth
movement. It is an offspring of the awakened
spirit of interest in things Jewish. The national
organization was formed twenty-one years ago.
Its greatest development, however, came after
the Balfour Declaration.
Young Judaea is definitely committed to Jew
ish nationalism. It believes that religious affil
iation is not the only bond of union among
Jews. It believes that the Jewish group pos
sesses definite cultural characteristics and
values worth preserving. It believes that the
Jewish group can make a cultural and spiritual
contribution to the world. It is interested in
the Jewish past, but it is much more concerned
with the Jewish future.
The generation that has cast a shadow over
the world, and allowed the flower of its youth
to ride through the valley of death has wit
nessed the development of a youth movement
which has broken away from the traditions
and guidance of the elders. Every country
has seen this movement-a veritable revolt of
the youth rise to influence and power. the
L'nited States alone has not followed suit.
Peculiarly situated geographically, isolated in
many ways from the cultural currents of the
old world, its youth well fed, it saw the World
War and its consequences in a glow of romance.
Here and there in the colleges and universities
there were small groups that bestirred them
selves. But. on the whole, our American youth
remained content to enjoy a strenuous life of
sports and athletics, have a good time, amt
leave serious problems to the concern of thyir
elders. Perhaps they were right. Nothing
mattered.
Our American Jewish youth, at least a strong
minority, reacted somewhat differently. It is
true that the majority of Jewish young men
and young women were like their American
non-Jewish friends. This applies especially to
our college and university students. But the
minority could not sit idly by. It was in
fluenced by the stirring times in Europe. The
percentage of foreign-born and first generation
American of immigrant parents bound them
more closely to the ambitious and. cultural in
fluences of European Jewry. In Europe Jewish
youth was in the front ranks of the youth
movement.
The experiment of rebuilding Flretz Israel
and the attempt to reconstruct Jewish life in
Russia on a more productive basis found their
counterpart in the intensification of Jewish life
in America. This naturally affected Jewish
youth organization too. While most of the
Jewish youth movement in this country was
patterned after the interests of the elders,
the writer believes that a more progressive
and enthusiastic spirit dominated the activities
of our Jewish youth. So we have seen the
development in this country of the Young
Israel, the Adas B’nai Israel which made strict
tradition and adherence to the Teran the basis
of reviving the interest of Jewish youth in
contemporary Jewish life.
The Intercollegiate Mcnorah started as a
youth movement. Of course it has since stabi
lized its cultural interests and is largely now
in the hands of its Alumni. But it has made
and is making a definite contribution through
the Mcnorah Journal. What impresses the
witter is the youthful spirit of Mcnorah leader
ship. The Mcnorah movement has retained a
deep searching curiosity and a probing interest
in Jewish culture the world over.
Then we have the Avukah which is the
Zionist student organization. And the Young
Judaea which functions best with hoys and girls
of adolescent age. The latest arrival in addi
tion to the Hillel Foundations at a number
of Universities is the A. Z. A. which proposes
to organize l*oys between the ages of 16 and
21 and is affiliated with the B’nai B’rith,
All of these organizations have certain aims
in common they believe in the survival of the
Jew, they are curious alHiut the future of the
Jewish group, they are vitally interested in
Palestine, and arc concerned with the contribu
tion of the Jew to the culture of America.
As Young Judaeans you are vitally interested
in every phase of Jewish life here and else
where. But mere interest means nothing. That
interest must take form and root. It must
he translated into constructive activity. And
that activity must lead to accomplishment. To
do this you must equip yourselves physically
and mentally. You must cultivate the joys of
a healthy body. You must develop a love for
the outdoor life, and sports must he hut a
means to the end of balanced, healthful living.
Physicai development is not enough. Along
with it must go intellectual alertness, mental

Jewish Educational Alliance
stimulation, and a knowledge of the cultural
experience of the Jewish group, and a knowl
edge of the culture of the land you love through
living, experiencing, doing. The latter you all
get in the public schools.
But to >>e an intelligent member of the Jewish
group you must know the past of your people.
You must know something of present achieve
ment and you must be inspired by the glorious
future awaiting the "eternal people. The
Jews are on the threshold of a new era. They
are experiencing a renaissance of cultural ac
tivity, They are face to face with a renaissance
of group life on a productive, useful basis.
Back to the earth which sustains all life. All
this must revitalize Jewish life in America.
American Jewry is certain to be influenced by
the fresh currents blowing our way from Pales
tine and Russia. Jewish leadership is needed
in Atlanta and elsewhere in the Southeast.
Yours is the privilege anil the task to prepare
yourselves for the assumpting of such leader
ship. Make your clubs the centers for all
Jewish activity. I-et each of you gather about
himself or herself a small numl*er of faithful
and enthusiastic workers who shall constitute
the nucleus out of which shall radiate Jewish
influence in your community and out of which
shall come the leadership of the future.
