as well as Christians. Wherever Jewish
education has been inadequate, wherever
Jewish ghettos have flourished in America
crime among Jews has increased.
What may be interpreted as a more in
tense interest in Jewish tradition is the
introduction into the public schools of
Hebrew as a language in the curriculum.
Both New York and St. Louis are to set
the example. It is assumed that if
American Jews take advantage of the
courses other cities will follow suit.
Among the incidents that must be re
corded in a review of Jewish history in
America during the past year are honors,
of a civic and Jewish nature, that have
been bestowed. It is also in place to note
the death of some of those Jews whose
activities during their lifetime aroused
national attention. The selection by
President Hoover of three Jews as United
States Ministers is worthy of especial
comment. These were Abraham C.
Ratshesky, of Boston, for Czechoslovakia;
Herman Bernstein, of New York, for
Albania; and David E. Kaufman, of
Philadelphia, for Siam. These are in
addition to Harry F. Guggenheim, U. S.
Minister to Cuba. Harry Bacharach of
Atlantic City was added to the roster of
Jewish Mayors in the United States. In
addition the usual number of Jews was
elected or raised to positions in the higher
courts of New York, California, Penn
sylvania and Massachusetts.

A list ria
A wave of anti-Semitism has swept all
over Central Europe, affecting Austria
no less than Germany. Anti-Jewish ani
mus has not been foreign to Austria in
previous years, but the past twelve months
have seen a growth of Fascism which has
meant an increase in anti-Semitism. Like
Adolf Hitler in Germany, Major Pabst
has been the leader of the National
Socialist forces in Austria. But his
Fascist program, which included Jew-
baiting as an inducement to its followers,
finally threatened the government itself,
so that recently he was expelled from the
country. The government has expressed
itself on numerous occasions in direct
opposition to anti-Jewish discrimination.
\\ hen Chancellor Schober, Vienna’s for
mer Police Commissioner, assumed office
in the early part of the year he announced
that the Jews of the Republic would have
every right accorded to other citizens.
Since Schober has given Austria a very
firm regime his views must be respected.
Incidentally, Austria had few major anti-
Semitic incidents during the year except
for a short period of rioting last October
and November, when the students at the
l Diversity of Vienna began a series of
assaults on their Jewish fellow students.
I his episode threatened to assume serious
proportions when the University author
ities closed the school for five days and
thus dampened the anti-Semitic ardor of
the fanatics. To the non-European ob
server it is inexplicable why anti-Semitism
in recent years has found its greatest
impetus in the universities. The univer
sities of Europe have always been thought
of as the breeding-places of liberalism and
progress. The change is possibly due to
a new type of student, who is recruited
