The Southern Israelite
British Jewish leaders were. That is
only an assumption and is based on the
type of leadership that has been visible
in American Jewry only during the past
year. But England gave the world two
new Jewish leaders: Lord Melchett and
D’Avigdor Goldsmid. A man like Lord
Melchett in America would inevitably be
associated with the reactionaries in
Jewish life. D’Avigdor Gnldstnid comes
of one of the most distinguished families
and is a non-Zionist. And yet he and
Lord Melchett spoke in terms that no
recognized Zionist leader lias dared to
employ. This, however, has been char
acteristic of almost every element in
English Jewry, who seemed to resent the
breaking of a sacred pledge by tlu-ir own
government. The continual protests
against British policy in Palestine have
had no visible effect on the government,
but at least they have furnished an inspir
ing- spectacle of upstanding Jewish
leadership.
Germany
The situation of the Jews in Germany
looks somewhat darker now than it has
been in the past. This is due primarily
to the sensational rise of the National
Socialists, who have virtually captured
an important province like Thuringia,
who have made serious inroads into the
government of Saxony and who threaten
to become an ever more important power
even in the national Reichstag. In one
municipal election after another they have
elected an unusual number of councilmen.
This has had its effects in a more fla
grant anti-Semitism, which has always
found fertile soil in the adopted home <»f
Houston Chamberlain. A number of riots
took place in various parts of Germany
during the year, but these have become
so usual in the year’s occurrences that
they receive merely casual mention.
The formation of the Jewish Agency in
Germany has been somewhat similar to
that in the United States, except that
Germany still has an impressive number
of anti-Zionists. These latter issued a
statement toward the end of the year
completely dissociating themselves from
Zionism and condemning its objects in
Palestine. In view of the importance of
some of these men, who are recruited
from the Reform wing of Jewry and in
clude President Wolff of the Federation
of Jewish Communities in Prussia, their
pronouncement is regarded with a great
deal of interest by public opinion in
Germany.
Thuringia has served as a model of
anti-Semitism to the other provinces of
Germany. With the accession to power
as Minister of Interior of Dr. Wilhelm
Frick, the Fascist leader and aide of
Adolf Hitler, the Thuringian Parliament
has been treated to a succession of anti-
Semitic monologues and hills. One hill
that was introduced provided against
intermarriage by Germans with “Jews or
Negroes,” who are held responsible for
Germany’s degeneration. The famous
“Hymn of Hate,” introduced into the
Thuringian schools by Frick, is still em
ployed, even though the Court of Appeals
at Leipzig ruled it unconstitutional
Hungary
Anti-Semitism in Hungary is still the
uppermost topic for the reviewer of a
year’s history of the Jewish population
there. Premier Bethlen made a number
of statements during the year in which he
