first president of the Consolidated Jew

REV. DR. SAMUEL ROSEN
BLATT, eldest son of Cantor Josef
Rosenblatt, and Rabbi of the Beth
Tfiloh Congregation in Baltimore, was
recently appointed lecturer in Jewish
literature at the John Hopkins Uni
versity, commencing with the current
semester. The new lectureship was
made possible through the generosity
of a number of Baltimorean members
of Dr. Rosenblatt’s own congregation,
and has for its aim the giving of in
struction in Jewish Philosophy and
literture and the stimulation of re
search in these fields of learning to
those interested.

GEORGE Z. MEDALIE, prominent
in New York Jewish communal affairs,
was recently named United States At
torney for the Southern District of
New York by President Hoover, suc

Jewish Philanthropic Societies and the
Hebrew National Orphans Home, a
director of the Washington Heights

Association and a member of the ad
ministrative committee of the Ameri

WHY JEWISH MOVIE FOLK
ARE NOT MORE JEWISH
(Continued From Page 6)
varying origins, tastes, and tempera
ments prevent them from forming into
any cohesive group. The only truly
local actress who is prominent in Hol
lywood and Los Angeles Jewish social
life, is Carmel Myers. Prior to his
death, Carmel Myer’s father was one
of Los Angeles’ outstanding Rabbis.
But when one considers the balance
of the more or less stable Jewish film
players, it can be seen why no effort
to congeal them into a group will be
successful. Included in these great,
near great and would-be great are
Joseph Schildkraut, Vera Gordon,
Maurice Black, Ann Brody, Bobby
Gordon, Claudette Colbert, Lilyan
Tashman, Leon Holmes, Hank Mann,
Bernice Holtz, George E. Stone, Ed
ward G. Robinson, William H. Strauss,
Roscoe Ates, George Sidney and Tcnen
Holtz.
Outside of all those mentioned be
fore in this article (and not forgetting
the famous Talmadgc family) a fine
comb would drag to light very few
other film players of Jewish extrac
tion.
One could take up the matter of how
many Jews there are amongst Holly
wood’s film directors—but that is still
another story.

SHOULD WEIZMANN
RESIGN?
(Continued From Page 5)
powers would that enhance the value
of our position ?
“Can we play big politics when
hacked by nothing but moral force T
Even in these days of disarmament,
military or economics coercion are
still the most powerful factors in the
diplomatic game. That persuasion and
moral coercion have to be used in a
large degree and in Realpolitik these
come under the heading of ahtadlo-
nuth this is not Weizmann’s fault.
It is, perhaps, a faux pas of history
against the Jewish people.
“Weizmann, more than any other
figure, exemplifies the spirit — the
highest spirit — of Jewish diplomacy.
He makes representations as a matter
of right, but always remembers that
there is no military force to validate
aggression. ’ ’
“The present administration repre
sents the antithesis of what they arc
trying to prove when they attack
Weizmann and score him on the
ground principally that he is not sub
ject to orders, that he is too indi
vidualistic. These same leaders rep
resent a certain hero-worship, which
does not take the mass of Jews into
consideration. ’ ’
“When the present administration
came into office it gave some evi
dence of consulting its constituency
but all that has disappeared. It has
not yet lived down its old biases and
prejudices. I had really hoped that
they would make every effort to win
the masses, but so far they have
failed. They spoke of bringing money
to Palestine, but everything that they
are now doing is calculated to make
the gathering of funds impossible. I
still believe in giving them a chance,
however. They ought to be given every
support until the next convention.
Many things ought to he overlooked.
We ought to he patient and tolerant.
Perhaps it is due to inexperience, to
the novelty of the responsibilities.
“Zionists must, nevertheless, re
serve for themselves the right to re
act to important situations. We are
now in the midst of one. If the ad
ministration should frow’n, upon the
Weizmann-MacDonald negotiations as
they have been carried on to date
they would be misrepresenting the
rank and file of Zionists.”
