Jerusalem.—A total of 228 Jews, 115
Christians, including thirty-three British
police, and ten Moslems, entered Pales
tine in November, according to figures
released by the immigration office. In
the same period eighty-six Jews, forty-
six Christians, and forty Moslems left.
Thirty-one prospective immigrants were
barred.

Prague.—An eccentric vagrant who was
known to the roads as Karl Hans Heine
and was found frozen to death in a way-
side ditch at Wittingau, South Bohemia,
was discovered to he a nephew of Hein
rich Heine, the great German poet. Karl
Hans Heine had spent many years of his
life as a wanderer, begging his way as
he tramped the roads.

Paris.—New light on the famous Drey
fus case is expected to he shed as a re
sult of word received here by the League
for Human Rights that the Soviet gov
ernment has opened the Czarist archives
for the League’s researchers who have
been studying all the documents in the
case.

Montreal.—For the first time in its
history, Pi Lambda Phi, a non-sectarian
fraternity, but in practice about 90 per
cent Jewish in membership, has elected a
Catholic as its head. J. B. Van Veen,
a Catholic attorney from New York City,
was elected supreme rex of the organi
zation at the conclusion of its annual
convention here.
This manifestation of intercreedal amity
is believed to have been prompted by the
fact that the convention was held in the
preponderantly Catholic city of Montreal
which tendered the fraternity a civic ban
quet. Other officers elected were Robert
M. Lintz, of New r York, supreme master;
Robert H. Rosenthal, of New York, su
preme keeper of the archives, and Philip
Luskin, of New York, supreme keeper of
the exchequer.

London.—More than 5,(XX) participated
in the memorial services for Lord Mel-
chett. Dr. Chaim Weizmann presided.
“The Jewish people the world over have
been deeply stirred,’’ he declared, “by the
tragedy of Lord Melchett’s death at a
time when the Zionist movement is
undergoing such a severe ordeal.”
Among the other speakers wlvj paid
tribute to Lord Melchett’s memory were
Sir Hugo Hirst, president of the Gen
eral Electric Conq>any; Major Harry
Ix>uis Nathan, M. P.; Sir Robert Waley
Cohen, Dr. M. D. Eder, Sir Herbert
Samuel, and the Honorable James H.
Thomas, who recalled many incidents in
which Lord Melchett displayed his eager
ness to serve the Zionist movement. Mes
sages were receivd from Baron Edmond
Rothschild, the Right Honorable Sir
Austen Chamberlain, Lord Allenby, Lord
Plumer, the French Labor leader, Leon
Blum, Senator Gugliemi Marconi, Sir
Norman Angell, and many other promi
nent personages.
A message was received from Felix M.
Warburg, of New York, prominent phi
lanthropist and Jewish leader, which
said:
“My personal loss which T suffered by
the death of Lord Melchett, with whom
I was privileged to work, is overshadowed
by the greater loss which the cause of
upbuilding Palestine suffered.”

Paris.—Great anxiety is being mani
fested in Jewish circles because of the
proposed new restrictions introduced by
radical members of the government and
designed to lessen unemployment, which
may compel many Jews to leave Erance.
The restrictions which will probably Ik*
adopted recommend that no labor permits
be issued to immigrants who have re
sided in I’'ranee for less* than five years;
that no change in profession be permitted
those who already jxissess labor permits;
that the French borders be closed alto
gether to all except tourists, and that all
irregularly admitted and illegal residents
of France be expelled.
Passage of these rulings would make
further Jewish immigration impossible.
At present about 1,(MX) Jews from Poland
enter France weekly. Many Jews now in
France would be forced to leave, being
unable to obtain work permits. The in
troduction of these restrictions by the
radical members is a blow to the Jews
as in the past the former have usually
been friendly to foreigners and influen
tial with the government.

Jerusalem.—The upper class Jews of
Persia are rapidly embracing the Bahai
religion, and the Jewish communities are
disintegrating, according to Dr. W. Fishel,
lecturer in the Oriental Institute of the
Hebrew University, who has just re
turned from a trip to Persia, Iraq, and
Kurdistan.
Dr. Fishel stated that English and
American Christian missions are making
the most of the disintegration of Jewish
communities, establishing missions and
schools among the poorer classes as the
community leaders turn to Bahaism. “The
Persian Jews are not only being con
verted, but are being used as instruments
for converting Jews of neighboring coun
tries,” say9 Doctor Fishel.
He spoke of a “Marrano” community
of 5,(XX) families in Meshed, who se
cretly continued to practice their Judaism,
and supported Jewish schools. In many
cities, he said, Jews had openly applied
to missions to establish schools for their
children, as they found the establish
ments of the Alliance Israelite and of the
Anglo-Jewish Association inadequate.
